Caroline Lizarraga

Think decorative painting is a thing of the past? Think again folks. I have been converted since decorative artist Caroline Lizarraga emailed us with a link to her portfolio. She loves old world style, and it’s no wonder – she trained in Florence. Whether old world or modern, Caroline makes beautiful spaces spectacular. Somewhere in my next home I want very matte black walls done in plaster or to look like plaster such as in the photo above. Gorg!

Moar please

I’ve been spoilt lately. Beautiful, original content has been mine for the sharing. The team at the generalist (my new must read) have been sending me images from some of my favourite homes, like landscape architect and TV presenter Brendan Moar‘s home. A retrolicious, colour saturated inner Sydney terrace house brimming with art, ceramics and glass. Of course the outdoor spaces play a major role too. Check out that deck! You can read more about Brendan’s home here on the generalist.

Mission:house

I love this house in the Mission district of San Francisco, home to architect Andrew Dunbar of Interstice Architects and his family. Typical SF Edwardian architectural details on the exterior front but then a really cool lower level facade (constructed from salvaged double-insulated window glass panels arranged in a shingle pattern) for the commercial level, with residential space on the second floor). It’s 3700 sq ft and was a sort of laboratory for the homeowners – experiments range from floors of expansive steel plates, walls of thermal plastics, and magnetic closet/display walls, to integrated passive energy strategies, ingenious waste-stream material reclamation, and high-tech thermal and solar power collection. I think that’s why I like it so much…there’s so much creativity and interesting details throughout. I am especially fond of their massive kitchen cabinet wall – about $12K worth of Ikea cabinets. Says Andrew: Small Ikea kitchens drive me crazy, but six kitchens’ worth of Ikea cabinets can be made into something beautiful. AMEN!

Deck me

I am so fed up with cold weather. I just want to sit out on a deck in a Bertoia diamond chair with a cocktail while wearing a tshirt and flip flops and breath in warm air. Is that really too much to ask?!?!

Thomas Kuoh

It’s been a bit of a crazy, strange week. A co-worker has been at the hospital all week because he left a health issue linger for months uncared for (I won’t get into the gory details, but it’s had me totally freaking out), one of my cats is really sick and the vet doesn’t know what it is, my husband saved a cat’s life yesterday, and I spent the evening baking for a potluck lunch at work. I never bake – I never have time. I did it in between blogging. While I wait for these cookies to cool, I picked some glorious photos from the portfolio of San Francisco photographer Thomas Kuoh to show you today. Hope you enjoy.
