I forgot ….

Posted on Tue, 16 Jun 2009 by midcenturyjo

… or maybe you all forgot to remind me. “Jo where are the retro posts?” It’s been weeks and weeks since I creaked open a vintage home decor book, swatted away the moths and fired up the scanner. Today’s pictures have no particular theme and you’ll have to guess which ones are retrolicious and which ones are shocking. Shouldn’t be too hard. Images scanned from The Practical Encyclopedia of Good Decorating and Home Improvement, Vol 1, Meredith Corporation, New York, 1971. Now just don’t let me forget again!

Mark Williams

Mark Williams is a photographer who divides his time between the UK and South Africa (lucky guy!). His portfolio is full of eye candy and I love that he always utilizes natural light that allows the spaces to appear realistic. Mark has a penchant for decor as he states in his bio “I think décor should be personal, original and sensitive to the type of architecture you inhabit….Décor for me is a wonderful blend of fashion, design, form and function”. This must make photographing such wonderful spaces an absolute pleasure.

Art Deco jewel

Posted on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 by midcenturyjo

Scott Weston has sent photos of his latest project. It’s finished, the client is in and it’s a little jewel.

Well, we have literally walked out the apartment door comfortably satisfied with that age old saying that “A place for everything and everything in its place.” In this waterside apartment the client brief was to store precious objects such as this Art Deco necklace.

The list goes on and on and the apartment elegantly sits there like a grand old dame in Elizabeth Bay………………………………..

We have felt lined drawers to store precious jewelry.
We have raspberry lined soft closing drawers to the bedside with adjustable tolomeo lamps.
Walnut timber joinery.
Kenzo 100% raspberry linen.
Pearlescent concertina wallpaper.
Gilded display boxes to house special treasures.
Silver leaf shelves for our Client’s extensive shoe collection.
Concealed doors that house silver bevelled mirrors.
Hermes orange quartz bench-top and matching overhead cabinets.
Liberty fabrics and bespoke velvet cushions.
Black laminate internal cabinetry all with soft closing drawers or doors.

These aren’t stylist preened and primped photos. These are just how the lucky client will live in her Art Deco jewel box. Lucky lucky woman…. I’m lusting after that wardrobe!

… a little bit of Australia on the windowsill

WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week?

    • Remember Ladybird Books? If you’re a certain age you will. Peter and Jane and all the gang are now emblazoned on homewares available in Australia from Lark. Vintage 1950s, 60s and 70s images will bring a smile to your face. More here.

    • Kate from 3rd Ward, an art facility in Brooklyn, NY emailed about upcoming classes. “I’d like to get the word out about some of our upcoming summer classes and I think we’d get a great response from your readers interested in the DIY aspect of your site that live in New York. We have a wide range of classes including woodworking (from the basics to furniture refinishing to more advanced design), Etsy-sponsored craft classes (embroidery, bookbinding, jewelry making), as well as welding & sculpture. All of our instructors are accomplished, currently practicing artists and craftsmen.” Oh if only I lived in nearby! Welding! Woodworking and there’s even a class on How to Make Crappy Stuff Awesome. More details here.

    • Love love love these prints by UK printmaker Dee Beale. Midcentury mixed with a Scandinavian feel.Follow her design process on her blog as well.

    • The 5th annual Guerilla Truck Show. Had to post this because their poster is hitting all the right buttons for me. Too much fun! The GUERRILLA’S are rolling their trucks into Fulton Market on Tuesday, June 16th, 6-9 pm. So no excuses. If you live in Chicago check it out.

  • And I can’t leave without a little blog love. I’m always clicking here and there to find blogs for my reading guides and came across two this week that I thought I’d share. Click on the banners above for lots of eye candy!
