Dan Davis update

Posted on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 by KiM

Last year Dan Davis introduced us to his new interior design firm, after having left given up his career in advertising. Two and a half years later they are now a staff of 5 and are currently working on 14 projects,  ranging from large commercial projects to intimate tablescapes. Such creativity and quirky touches. Thanks Dan for sharing with us again!

I am always inspired by your image collection, but why can’t I make the photos larger on your new blog layout? I miss that option.

KiM says:

Making them clickable and larger slows down the server hence the site. Sorry.

Dan love that loft! The colours, the mix of smooth and industrial with natural. I love the use of found objects. That industrial mould stair case is too cool.

i think your new site looks GREAT! very refreshing! great job.

What an amazing designer, i love the range of design, from kind of funky to just darned beautiful. Looks like he made the right choice in career changes!

OMG how amazing is your new layout??? LOVING IT! Also loving the multicolored lamp hung over the dining room table!

Love. Especially all of the cool sculpture. That upside-down bowling-pin sculpture and the giant cogs and arrow are brilliant. I also like the "wall of knobs". Perfect mix of quirk and beauty. Must go put tulips in my chandelier now…

Hi Kim – I love this post – I am very inspired by the tension between cool modern and quirky /earthy / woody. I love anything that is unexpected and playful and these photos deliver that in spades. I hope that you continue to post quirkier stuff that we usually don’t see elsewhere. I was all over the kitsch post a couple of weeks ago – which inspired my first ever comment on your site (about whether that crazy loft was pastiche or kitsch). Overall, I feel that there is a certain uniformity (dare I say conformity) in so much decor right now and I feel that this website is one of the few that really offers some alternatives.

I was also wondering if you were going to start posting holiday stuff. I need to know if am the only person who calls herself design savvy who still puts her hokey family mixed bag ornaments on her tree…..

KiM says:

Honestly, quirky is pretty hard to find. But we try, because Jo and I have pretty quirky tastes in design I’d say. As for holiday stuff, we don’t usually make a point of posting it. Mostly because we typically search out people’s portfolios and they don’t often include holiday photos. We got an email recently that I responded to this morning from a reader asking for holiday decor tips. I told her to watch Peter Fallico’s Christmas decorating special on HGTV. He always blows me away with his creative modern Christmas decor ideas. I think it was one of his shows that had me searching all over Ottawa a couple years ago for cheap white feather boas to decorate my doorways. I’m also dying for a retro silver Christmas tree…

Love the floor in the office space. The faucet handles above the faucet are way cool. The bowling pin display is beyond unique. Great job with the blog. It makes me smile!
