Reader request – antique bathtub

Posted on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 by KiM

Time for this week’s reader request: “My name is Gisela Diaz and I’m a Spanish girl living in Portugal. Recently I bought a antique bathtub. I been looking for that for more than ten years, and finally I got it. I would like to ask you for some inspiration to restore it and to install it.” I went through my stash of bathroom photos and found some featuring antique bathtubs – mainly clawfoot – to show Gisela the placement/colours/taps and whatever else she may need to figure out. I am completely jealous. I have wanted a clawfoot tub for a long time. Actually, I’d settle for any tub that is large enough to take a bath in (and have adequate water coverage). Last time I took a bath I was probably 8 years old. In all the homes I have rented/bought I have never had a decent tub. I think it’s about time I get one….

I LOVE the dark rustic one …and the Union Jack inspired room …though I am biased, as I just used a Union Jack print in my game room …sooo love it.

It seems so counter to the spirit of a giant clawfoot to tuck it against a wall — they need room to roam! However, I have to admit that I've become entranced with the neck-deep Japanese deep soak tubs.

How lovely they are! All the bathrooms are so different, with one thing in common: a romantic bathtub!

Great post! My partner and I both want a clawfoot tub some day when we have a bigger space! So lovely.
I am a big fan of Adria Vasil who wrote the Ecoholic books. Here is a link to some information about avoiding LEAD in old tubs.
I hope this link works. It should jump to page 174.
Best wishes Gisela for many happy baths!

Wow! That's a lot of inspiration, beautiful bathrooms.

When I was a little girl our bathroom had a claw tub,
it was like a big swimming pool to me, I loved bath time.

We've just bought a house with a clawfoot bath, but it drives me crazy that the people who put it in have it sticking out diagonally into the room. I so want to change it, but have to wait until we have $$$ for that project- too much else to do. These photos are great- totally inspire me. They had also painted a CREAM and black checkerboard pattern on the wooden floors- but seeing those white floors makes me know EXACTLY what I want to do with that!

pink and green tubs are adorable. And a black and white tiled floor is my ultimate dream.

the black and white bathroom (melanie acevedo) is simply perfect…love everything about it.

Lovely! I can't wait to have one…we had one in every home in England during my childhood!
