The photos from my last post got my decorating juices flowing…but I always go back to Abigail Ahern‘s spaces, where darker and bigger are better. Every time.
I finally have a fireplace again in my living room (I had one 2 houses ago) and this time it is beautiful, a centrepiece of the room with a mantel deep enough to display pretty much anything. As seen in my last post of the space, I had stuck some off-white West German vases on it with all the dried flowers I had around, my Vladimir Tretchikoff Green Lady print I unpacked from my art stash in the basement and some little ornaments I picked up in Puerto Vallarta I have not figured out where to hang yet. I thought over the weekend that maybe it was about time to think about redoing this set-up…and I could not really come up with anything. Time for a fireplace mantel round-up for inspiration! Here are a bunch of mantels I found all over the internet that I really like. Especially the one above. 🙂

A modest budget but a beautiful, subtle renovation by Sonelo Design Studio. Old becomes new with simple, clean lines and a limited, muted palette. No wonder the Theresa St Residence is shortlisted for Australia Interior Design Awards 2015.
Don’t you just love flipping through the pages of a magazine for inspiration? Oh and eye candy. Definitely eye candy! The latest issue of Inside Out is bursting at the seams with both. Managing Editor Lee Tran Lam sent me this sneak peek and I can’t wait to see more when this issue is out on Thursday.
The home belongs to a family of five, and manages to still be both kid-friendly and a house that you’d totally place on your wish list. It’s designed to withstand the lively impact of three boys, but being child-proof doesn’t necessarily mean having to throw covers over everything and locking up all your favourite things. In fact, some family-friendly details happen to be clever design ones – such as the Bolon flooring tiles in the playroom, which make for a striking interlocking pattern on the ground, but also happens to keep stains and spills out (yes, you can accidentally knock over some food on this floor and there will be no “this house is ruined”-style repercussions or grief). Other eye-catching details include the recessed timber wall in the main bedroom that acts like the ultimate bedhead. That’s just a few of the many things to love about this home (as you can see)! (The home is the latest in Inside Out’s “Open For Inspection” series. Thanks to Bugaboo they opened up this Geelong house to a series of guests and filmed a tour of the space, for people who weren’t able to trek out to this corner of Victoria… like me. You can keep an eye out for a detailed visit soon at insideout.com.au.)
Don’t worry if you aren’t in Australia and can’t get your hands on a copy of the magazine. You can read along on Zinio, Google Play, the Apple Newsstand and Nook.
Just a quick note that the 3 kitties are doing great after their vet visit, although the events of yesterday were a bit traumatizing. Poor Georgie was pregnant but the kittens were thankfully young enough that they were removed and she was able to be vaccinated and spayed. Now that all this is out of the way I can simply worry about getting them socialized and turn them into the friendly little buggers I know they can be so I can find them new homes. Anyway, yesterday was freaking traumatic for me too – trying to get them in their carriers, worrying until the vet called, then him telling me Georgie was pregnant…when I saw this photo I wanted to cry it is such a beautiful bathroom, and dear gawd how I could use a good long soak…
