Interior designer Marta de La Rica calls it a taste of calm where traditional meets contemporary. This Madrid apartment is an ode to beauty with an emphasis on colour, texture, fabrics and craft. The painted walls and chandelier in the living room bring a sense of whimsy as does the shell-encrusted bathroom vanity. Chic European living but with Spanish roots.

The structure of this single-family house in the Region of Murcia in Spain was built before Manuel García took over to create the moody and modern interiors.

“The aim is to present an eminently horizontal home, very compact and material, with cladding executed with care and detail. A succession of planes that are overlapped reminds of strata layers.”

The small plot was designed for enjoyment and easy maintenance. Due to the climate of the area, the ground floor is open to the outside to take advantage of the mild winters and the abundant sunny days. On the upper floor, the bedrooms open onto the uncovered terrace that surrounds this level. The continuation of materials from the outside to the interior provides the common link. It was a gut demolition and reimagining of this São Paulo apartment by Memola Estúdio that created expansive open-plan social spaces with killer views. Wooden floors warm the brutalist concrete shell while white walls bounce the light into the apartment and provide a backdrop for the owners’ art collection. New and old furniture pieces share the neutral tones of the finishes with the “new color palette inspired by the autumn tones of the sunset that appears on the horizon.”

“As far as 2-bedroom new builds go, this property packs a punch. Studio Doherty were brought on board to reimagine and design the interiors, working alongside Enth Degree Architects and their architectural framework, which reflected our client’s passion for mid-century architecture (think 1950’s Palm Springs). Our challenge was to create a dynamic, inviting, unique and kooky home that referenced, rather than imitated touchstones of mid-century design.”

From the electric blue spiral staircase to the DTILE kitchen, from the carefully curated mix of vintage and new furniture (hello 13 m long conversation pit) and the window into the pool this house by Melbourne-based Studio Doherty is stylish and fun, perfect for entertaining all your family and friends.

“Originally built as a 1920s Spanish Revival, we gave the three-story home a complete overhaul to incorporate modern style and Art Deco influence … The space includes a library, elevator, tasting room, and lower level designed for lengthy stays from family and friends. The centerpiece of the home is a spectacular custom fabricated, curved blackened-steel staircase with bronze top cap that connects all four levels—including the roof deck, with its hot tub and raised vegetable/herb garden.”

Light, glass, Art Deco lines, standout vintage lighting. It all comes together under the design hands of Regan Baker Design to produce an all-enveloping family home over multiple levels.
