Dark and rich tones in a Hollywood Hills home

Posted on Tue, 29 Jul 2025 by KiM

Canyon Estate is a stunning example of blending traditional architecture with modern, bold design. Set against the backdrop of the Hollywood Hills, the home features rich, saturated tones, layered textures, and a curated mix of antiques with contemporary pieces. Expansive views and high-end finishes offer a luxurious yet lived-in feel. Each room honors the home’s architectural heritage, while the design’s modern touches bring a fresh, sophisticated edge, creating a space that feels both timeless and striking. Balancing old-world charm with modern elements, the design creates a unique sensorial experience. The juxtaposition of classic details and sleek, contemporary furnishings results in an inviting home that’s as functional as it is refined. Canyon Estate showcases a harmonious relationship between past and present, creating a residence that’s moody yet effortlessly elegant.
This sort of dark and moody vibe has been something I’ve been drawn to since forever. It has an edge and an elegance that’s understated and so calming. I adore this. Another gem by designer Sarah Solis. Architect: Robert Huddy; Photos: Michael Clifford.

Detail oriented

For Jen Cherian of Annarya Design it is all about the details. A kitchen that had great bones so only a rework was done – the different stones with painted and dark wood cabinetry makes this look so classic and timeless. A little corner retreat in the bedroom to read a book with a cup of tea. The tiniest of powder rooms with large-scale floral wallpaper and a custom marble sink. Archways in bathrooms – in one case with a different colour tile on the outside wall. One with diagonally laid checkered marble floor (a fav of mine). A retro vibing laundry room with black and white checkered tile floor. Love every bit of each of these spaces.

This 380 m² apartment, located in a landmark building in Madrid’s Salamanca district, has been fully renovated by Galán Sobrini Arquitectos. Original architectural elements were preserved, while new additions were thoughtfully integrated using natural yet sophisticated materials such as restored pine flooring and intricately detailed stone. Highlights include the formal fireplace elevation and a bespoke dining room hutch and bar, creating a richly textured, elegant interior that honors the home’s heritage with a contemporary sensibility.

Cole Valley classic

Lauren Nelson Design, in collaboration with architect Joram S. Altman, reimagined this 1908 Classic Revival home Cole Valley, San Francisco with a bold design overhaul. Stripped to the studs with only the front façade preserved, the house was lifted, expanded and opened to city views. Inside, classic detailing, paneled walls, high ceilings, and curated furnishings, creates a fresh, vibrant atmosphere that blends historic charm with contemporary ease and colour.

A designer’s tranquil Malibu home

A 1951 Colonial Revival home in Point Dume, reimagined by Sarah Solis as a serene and soulful family retreat. Rather than expanding the footprint, the focus was on preserving the home’s original structure while layering in warmth, texture, and character. Plaster walls, vintage pieces, and custom Galerie Solis furnishings define the interiors, bringing quiet richness and a sense of ease to each space. Natural light, vaulted ceilings, and thoughtful materials create a feeling of calm throughout. Outdoors, mature olive trees, a vegetable garden, and an open kitchen connect the home to the land and the rhythms of California living.
Bless her for understanding how magical this home’s original features were and not engaging in a gut renovation. The warmth and sophistication, liveable and enveloping atmosphere Sarah has created here is really special. No doubt her dream home. Photos: Michael Clifford.
