Simple and beautifully made. Shouldn’t that be our mantra for the pieces we live with in our homes? Like this collaboration between deVOL Kitchens and designer and wood man, Sebastian Cox. That black kitchen cabinet makes my heart sing. You can see more on the process over on my page.

Kitchens are on my mind at the moment. My own is way overdue for a complete renovation. I’m drawn to these raw but beautifully crafted, rough but luxe kitchens by German-born, Italian-based designer Katrin Arens. Honesty, simplicity. Less is more. Reclaimed and re-used materials, rich with history and patina. Sigh.

Nothing says classic like a black and white kitchen – especially white uppers and black lower cabinets. Throw in a white marble countertop, gold pendants, faucets and hardware, some Tolix stools and a marble Saarinen tulip table and you have just about the best combination EVER. I love the inner city suburbs of Sydney. Darlinghurst, Potts Point, Paddington, Redfern and the suburb that contains today’s stalking victim subject, Surry Hills. You all know I love a Victorian era terrace house. I stalk enough of them here on the blog. Narrow and small, dark and dank, often difficult to live expansively in, a design challenge to update for the needs of modern living which is why I’m taken by this interesting interpretation of inside/outside, up/down living. A fab inner urban crash pad. Link here while it lasts.
P.S. The video helps explain the space much better than the photos.

Los Angeles based interior designer Caitlin Murray believes that almost every room can benefit from a bit of black and a little lacquer. And a little bit of colour, mixed metals, mid century modern and texture. It’s fun. It’s bright. I like. It’s Black Lacquer Design.
