L’après-guerre

Often times an architect’s portfolio seems so unattainable. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this project by Montreal architects L. McComber, because it appears to be a very attainable renovation – taking an older home and making it current and functional without a bunch of fancy and unnecessary detail. To conserve the best aspects of this post-war worker housing: this is what a young family asked their architect. The wood floors and almost all of the walls and original plaster mouldings have been restored. A series of targeted modifications helped to bring light and a modern feel to the home: a new pantry-wall in the kitchen, sliding doors to the hallway and a serving hatch in the dining room. The bathroom has been expanded underneath the existing skylight dividing it with the bath on one side and a large storage wall on the other. Cascading onto the natural quartz ceramic, the overhead light provides a welcoming depth in this tiny space. A small playroom in the basement covered with birch wood ceiling and fibre board walls created a pleasant refuge for the kids.

Leone Design Studio

Brooklyn based Leone Design Studio consists of architects Roy and Jen Leone whose modern and timeless aesthetic is just what the doctor ordered for these lovely New York homes. I am a little baffled by the home a few photos in where the glass walled shower is directly behind the kitchen. That is totally throwing off my chi.

Inside Out and my dream warehouse

Posted on Wed, 25 Feb 2015 by midcenturyjo

Every month an email arrives from Inside Out magazine’s Managing Editor Lee Tran Lam and every month I get excited. The sneak peeks from inside the latest issue of the magazine are always amazing. Today she sent my dream home. I have wanted this particular space ever since I first spotted it in a previous incarnation as Lynda Gardener‘s home. Now it belongs to someone else (boo hoo not me) and I think I love it even more.

This is the home of artist Saskia Folk – whose “pick and mix style” is encapsulated by all the highly original items tucked into her place. There’s a couch decked in “country check”, a giant ice-cream light guarding the bottom of her stairs, a kitchen island bench made from old basketball flooring and kitchen cabinetry constructed from old meter boxes found in the Australian outback. Styling by Heather Nette King, photography by Derek Swalwell, from March issue of Inside Out.

Saskia you’ll have to move out because I’m moving on in! Can’t wait to see more in this month’s issue out tomorrow. Don’t fret if you aren’t in Australia though. You can read along on  ZinioGoogle Play,  the Apple Newsstand and Nook.
