This house could not be more invigorating and whimsical. It all starts at the apple green front door. Wallpaper and vibrant upholstery and patterns unite to create a super fun home. Her Latin roots, fondness for Southern hospitality, and penchant for parties were the overarching parameters for this gradual home makeover. The kitchen got a major facelift, but the original cabinets were preserved and a few doors removed to showcase her collection of vintage dinnerware and serving pieces. Paisley wallpaper, watercolor print curtains, and lime-painted entryway are evidence of her passion for mixing happy color and bold pattern. The medley of new and salvaged furniture includes a dining table rescued from an abandoned house, an 80s sidebar, the daughter’s handed-down vintage desk and a super-long velvet banquette that turns the sunroom into a hangout. In the master bedroom, refinished finds cozy up to a custom canopy bed with leather inserts. Designed by Toledo Geller.

Sunday at the office

Posted on Sun, 30 Aug 2020 by KiM

If you’re stuck going in to the office on a Sunday, it would be no sweat if it was as cool as the Oakland, CA office of Black Girls CODE (an inspiring organization trying to increase the number of women of color in the digital technology space by introducing girls 7-17 to CS – which I LOVE. 20 years ago when I was in the computer science program at a local college, I was one of maybe 5 women, and that included my twin sister. And we 5 were white or Asian). Designer Kīyonda Powell used such stunning, jewel tones in this space, and lots of fun patterns in fabrics and wallpaper.

House of jewels by Studio Sven

Posted on Tue, 19 May 2020 by KiM

I wanted to share another very intriguing project by Studio Sven. In this case it’s quite a traditional style home that is given quite unexpected lashings of jewel-toned colours. At first I was a bit taken aback but the more I devoured these photos the more I like what I see (I’m still uncertain about that blue ceiling – not a fan of blue). It’s an inexpensive and very impactful way of modernizing a home.

In true Sasha Bikoff fashion, she has taken something ordinary and made it extraordinary. Ok, this “Garden State Revival House” in Newark, New Jersey isn’t exactly ordinary but it’s sooooo traditional on the outside that you would never in a million years expect to see rooms painted pink, yellow, green, red, purple, blue, teal, lime. The insanity!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

Purple haze – a Chicago pied-à-terre

Posted on Tue, 21 May 2019 by KiM

When drama and glamourous details are on the menu for a doctor’s second residence. Designed by Chicago’s PROjECT. This west loop pied-à-terre had to fit the profile: a spunky black-and-white escape with hard candy hits of amethyst throughout. Even 1,800 square feet can’t confine space hell bent on having a good time. The custom wall mural in the dining area holds a few subliminal personal references, but to the naked eye it’s all street grit and ka-pow. The game zone has the electric glow of a purple fluorescent light installation, making Friday night pizza taste better. A space for the kids to bunk, an ethereal master retreat, and Jennifer’s rad geometric marble flooring in the bathroom…
