Peti Lau

NYC based interior designer Peti Lau has coined her style AristoFreak™ The process starts with four words: worldly, drama, romance, and luxe. From there, I use the spaces that I have to work with, combined with the personalities of my clients with design elements by using color, light, patterns and textures to tell their story. With an eclectic flair her spaces have bits of mid-century, Hollywood regency and ethnic flavours. And she can work with even the smallest of rooms and make them cozy and cool.

Södermalm Heights

I have much love for the eccentricity of London design agency Minale + Mann. This project is another favourite of mine. M+M was commissioned to refurbish this dilapidated 18th century apartment in the centre of Stockholm’s Sodermalm district. The apartment was restored to its former glory, with tiled Swedish fireplaces and stunning original oil painted ceilings. Furniture was custom fitted, and the kitchen and bathrooms were finished in Swedish sand ash to enhance our eclectic mix of antiques and artwork. A 70s jukebox was even converted into a whisky bar! (Previous M+M features here and here)

Uptown prewar

Lawd half mursey I adore this New York dwelling by architecture firm raad studio. The dark floors, beautiful (original I presume) moldings, neutral colour scheme with just enough black, and OMG that kitchen! This is the definition of a considered home. It is fairly simple yet every inch is just as it should be. I was sitting here prepping this post wondering if I could live here. I would LOVE to live here but I can’t imagine going thrifting and coming home with something totally random…where would it go?

P.S. While on the subject of thrifting, when this post goes live I will be on my way to Toronto with the husband to partake in the Toronto Antique & Vintage Market for the first time. Partake meaning I will divide my time between helping with the Daff Design booth and shopping! If you’re in the area this weekend come check the show out. If it’s anything like the Ottawa show it will be AWESOME!!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday dear readers! It has been a long work week and I am so grateful the weekend is upon us! But my work never seems to end. Tonight I will be helping the husband set up his booth at this year’s Etsy Made in Canada show here in Ottawa taking place Saturday and Sunday which all you Ottawans should come out to because it’s the biggest crafty show of the year! And maybe buy a vintage radio converted into a Bluetooth speaker. 😉 (Or at least stop by and entertain me for a few minutes.) Anyhoo, there goes my weekend. But before I go I leave you with a couple of spaces I came across lately that I cannot get out of my head. There’s nothing spectacular about them but for some reason I am drawn to their random eclecticism. Because I love me some random decor.

The latest from Inside Out

Posted on Wed, 23 Sep 2015 by midcenturyjo

Can you believe another month has flown by? That it’s time for the new issue of Inside Out magazine? Managing Editor Lee Tran Lam emailed a little sneak peek of what’s in the pages of the October issue.

If you are after some house inspiration I’ve got some tasty pics you can snack on from our new October issue, out Thursday. This home is the ultimate example of a work-in-progress – the owners renovated it in bits and pieces for 13 years (!). They really played the long game – and had to deal with some crazy scenarios (one stage of the renovation involved four kids sharing one bedroom for six months; early on, they had to use the barbecue as a makeshift kitchen because only half the house was completed, and the small bathroom sink was assigned for wash-up duties)! But it definitely paid off as you can see in the photos of this updated 1924 weatherboard cottage. Styling by Jane Frosh. Photography by Phu Tang.

I’ve recommenced renovations at my old house after a longer than expected break so it’s good to see a family who have made it through the long haul. Anyone else lusting after that old pine table teamed with the white Thonets in the kitchen? Can’t wait to see more in this month’s issue out tomorrow. Don’t fret if you aren’t in Australia though. You can read along on  ZinioGoogle Play,  the Apple Newsstand and Nook.
