From the Ottawa Antique & Vintage Market

Last weekend was the Spring 2015 Ottawa Antique & Vintage Market and I was there helping my husband with his booth and snapping photos before the show opened. We had a blast, met alot of great visitors and vendors, and my husband sold some of his radios so it was a successful weekend. I thought I would share some photos of what I came home with and some other goodies I spotted at the show.

Me! My t-shirt by Anna of Door Sixteen (from her Society6 shop K IS FOR BLACK.) was a hit. 🙂

I got a great deal from a former advertiser, Ed Haldorsen, on this gorgeous African teak coffee table. Made in Canada By Imperial. It needs some sanding and oiling so it is yet another project to tackle this spring/summer.

The glasses and teak tray were from a vendor whose name I can’t recall (they sell at the Almonte flea market), and the West German vase and glass etched decanters were a steal from the kind vendor across the aisle from us, Peter Frampton.

I also found this vintage Fly-Tox ad that is really cool and now needs framing (I have a ridiculous amount of art piling up since moving to this house that needs framing and hanging). From Montréal shop Décadisme.

Each time this show comes to town, I always have to check out the Samantha Howard Vintage booth. She has the most incredible collection of modernist and brutalist Scandi/Finnish/Canadian jewelry (along with pottery/ceramics) and I can never resist picking up something. This time it was a Finnish ring and a gorgeous bronze hinged necklace by Hannu Ikonen.

This is my husband’s booth for his company Daff Design. He guts vintage, non-working radios and builds custom speaker boxes with an amp and Bluetooth to fit inside. They sound amazing (IMHO). He is currently working on this full time and it has been a bit slow-going but there was so much enthusiasm and positive feedback at the show and he sold several of them (and ended up with a TV spot and an article in the Ottawa Citizen). I’m really proud of him. 🙂

The photos above are from Samantha Howard‘s booth (unfortunately none of my jewelry photos turned out). The vase at the top of the photo above is MASSIVE. I drooled over that for a while. (I believe they’re both by Bjorn Wiinblad).

These guys were new to the show – Monstrous Designs. Their furniture was to die for – particularly this authentic Fritz Hansen egg chair.

From Ed Haldorsen’s booth, where everything caused heart palpitations.

THESE STOOLS! (which could very well have been authentic Arne Jacobsen dot stools)

I wanted this bird cage – would have made an amazing hanging plant holder.

Native Stone Art – these folks have the largest collection of turquoise jewelry I have ever seen.

One of the blog posts I had done while I was down south was about architecture firm Creative Renovations. It seems some of the photos I had featured of a sparse townhome in Red Hook, Brooklyn, have since been transformed into an eclectic and stunning home. Creative Renovations worked on this project with architect Rafe Churchill and his wife, interior designer Heide Hendricks. The 19th century six-family tenement was a diamond in the rough, and when purchased had already been almost entirely gutted.

Lacking any character, it was repurposed into a single family home with a first floor apartment. Rafe and Heidi went a traditional route with the decor, with some loft-like qualities and a maritime theme (it is a few blocks from the waterfront). At first I was a bit put off by the somewhat odd colourful trim detail….

But with the furnishings in place – an eclectic blend of traditional and mid-century, it makes complete sense. It was an inexpensive way to add an architectural feature and make it pop. Just the right amount of quirkiness. (Photos: John Gruen)

A Coquitlam townhome

If this Coquitlam townhome was set up as a model home or if it was a new sale listing, it would be snapped up in an instant. Vancouver’s Fox Design Studio did an incredible job here. They used the same colour palette of grey and white with black and yellow/gold accents throughout that is cohesive and flows beautifully. The bold punch of orange in the powder room is an unexpected and welcome touch. Midcentury colors, playful furniture pieces, punchy artwork and not-so-shy wall treatments give this detail heavy space a not-so-serious vibe. Think Palm Springs, but in fall-formal wear.
