Take a classic 1960’s commercial warehouse building. Bland, boring, in need of a little reuse, redesign magic. Insert two residential apartments and a ground floor retail/office space into the shell. The apartments reference the 60s vernacular of the warehouse building. Glass and steel window walls, internal courtyard. Cool interiors. Cool inner city living. Mission accomplished. Great space. I’m real estate stalking in Bondi Junction in Sydney. More and more these days I’m drawn to real homes. A little battered about the corners but still stylish. Don’t get me wrong. I love a big glitzed glamazon of a house like the next interior design junkie but I know I’ll never own one. Here’s what the agent wrote on the listing… “Refreshingly different and brimming with artistic flair, this freestanding home has been lovingly held by one family for more than 40 years.” maybe some agent will write that about my house when it’s time for me to let it go. This is the coolest boat dock I have ever seen. As soon as I found it I sent it to my sister and brother-in-law who have a cottage, knowing they’d get a kick out of it. Via Texas architecture firm Bercy Chen Studio. Located on a bend in Lake Austin across from Canyonland Nature Preserve, the site is suggestive of the elliptical form that maximizes the beautiful views of the undulating hills beyond. The rounded edges of the dock peel away, allowing more of the landscape to be captured into the visual frame.

It’s been a while since I blogged some projects by Parisian interior designer Sarah Lavoine (see here and here). She is one of my favourite designers – amazing creativity, unpretentious style, and not afraid to go bold. Here is another project of hers with lots of bits and bobs to love. The smooshy sectional, the perfect blue-grey wall, the handy rod on the kitchen backsplash, to-die-for dressing rooms, black cozy attic, a painted floor in dramatic stripes…

Welcome to the wonderland home of Mr and Mrs Charlie. Charlie Kinyon, an artist working in Austin and Sydney  and Melissa Ninham creator and maker, weaver of wire and rope and dreams. Together they create and explore. This is a way of thinking, a way of living, a way of creating beauty, an expression and a statement. I love it. I wish I could live like this.
