In a wood in Amagansett, Long Island there is a coming together of architect and client, of the rural building traditions of Long Island and Finnish Design. Three discreet buildings bound together by glass passages. Shingle and siding, rural and industrial, communal and private, view and personal space, polished concrete and painted wood. A marriage of man made and nature, of a building and a home. A perfect marriage. Amagansett House by Bagchee Architects.

I thought I’d get a bit artsy fartsy with you all this afternoon and feature two really creative projects by Parisian architecture firm 37.2 (made up of Francesca Bonesio and Nicolas Guiraud). First up we’ve got “cook on the wild side”. This domestic installation is a portrait of our client Lise. Made of multiple oak pieces, it shows two distinctive sides of Lise’s personality. The corridor side is a very symmetrical, neat, precise and tidy structure that turns wild. The kitchen side is a very instinctive, light and chaotic design that seems more fragile. What a fun way to hide an ugly hood fan!

And this is a little ‘out there’ but the scenery is so beautiful and the structure has such an impact… Sloping House is a makeshift shelter that clings to the side of an extinct volcano in the Puy de Serveix, in France’s Massif Central. Built from recycled timber by the artists themselves, this sculptural one-person refuge, seems to erupt from the grassy slope, as if the structure’s wooden planks are being flung out of the earth only to reform into the neat lines of an archetypal hut. On entering, you will be forced to crouch, as in a boat descending a wave. You will have the feeling of literally plunging into a skyless landscape and it is only when you seat yourself down on the strange, angular recliner within that the sky will reappear and you will experience the unique sensation of this peculiar vantage point.

I often wish I had enough will power to live minimally. This location home in the UK is a dream. It’s a bit sad to see what must have been alot of really gorgeous wood painted but WOW – all this white is spectacular. I wish I could live with all those white painted floors too but I’ve learned the hard way that they aren’t practical in my home. I’d settle for just the kitchen – TO DIE FOR!!! Via 1st Option.
