Emily Henson

Posted on Mon, 3 Mar 2014 by KiM

When I grow up I want to be an interior stylist like Emily Henson. In the meantime while I continue to dream of a life of props and rearranging other people’s homes, I’ll peruse her portfolio then dog-ear my copy of her book Modern Rustic, my all-time favourite that I could flip through every night before bed to evoke dreams about reclaimed wood, faux sheepskins and vintage finds.

Monday’s pets on furniture

Posted on Mon, 3 Mar 2014 by KiM

If you’d like to send me photos to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow my basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture that you want to show off…and your pet happens to be sitting on it. And second, if the photo is too dark or unfocused then it may not make the cut. Photos, your name, location and a brief description can be sent to desiretoinspirekim[at]hotmail[dot]com and PLEASE don’t send closeups of your pet! Thanks!

Before I get into today’s pet post, I just wanted to thank everyone SO MUCH who donated money to help with little Agnes’ vet bills last month. After 2 vet visits she is healthy, hernia free, has a few less teeth and is doing well at her new home with her mom Jasmine. She’s a bit of a feisty girl and is taking a bit of time to warm up to Jasmine but they make the perfect pair. Thank you Jasmine for taking her in and having patience (and for sending me these pics). I love a happy ending. 🙂

I’ve been reading your blog for years and have always wanted to participate in the Monday’s Pets On Furniture post BUT– I’ve never had a pet. That changed right before Christmas when I found this guy outside my apartment, all wet from the slushy snow. I brought him in and couldn’t give him up. His name is Howell. This is my first (very) crappy place, but I’ve done what I could. In the first, Howell is sitting on a curbside find. I had every intention of reupholstering it, but then decided the shabbiness added “character”. I think of it as my Sherlock Holmes chair. The other pic shows one of my many garage sale pieces, an old sewing table which I still intend to refurbish, as you will notice it’s missing some knobs.
(P.S. Any appearance of posing is purely coincidental. It is horribly difficult to get a playful kitten to sit still. Howell is merely looking for treats.)

It’s my husbands Grandma’s chair, his parents were cleaning out a shearing shed a week ago, which is used for storage, and have put in our apartment in Melbourne, we love it…obviously Charlotte our cat does too!
– Annabel

This is my cat Fluffy, who is a real camera hog. That’s okay because he is pretty photogenic. 🙂 The first pic I took because I was trying out fabric for a pillow on my sofa (and it helps to take photos of rooms and then look at what I like and don’t like). He decided to jump on the round end table that I use as a coffee table. The second pic, I know is a bit of a close up, but it’s one of my favorites of him. Also, I really like that yellow chair.

This is Kutaa (a Staffy X) enjoying the last days of the Melbourne summer sun. She is sitting on an Ikea LOCKSTA chair (super comfortable for pets and people)!

If there is plaid on the cushion, my cat Moody always chose the top of the couch to chill.
– Marion (Belgium)

This kitten is called Rafa and loves to sleep on the couches, the fridge, even the kitchen sink! anywhere is good to rest for him! =)

Stalking South Yarra

Posted on Mon, 3 Mar 2014 by midcenturyjo

Can’t help myself. I’m still stalking. How about a two bedroom terrace in South Yarra, Melbourne? Stylish inner city living just metres from the action. Love the kitchen and want to steal that cockatoo painting. On open for inspection days I’ll be on the patio with coffee and newspaper. Link here while it lasts.

the generalist

We know you love blogs and online magazines. We know you love original content so we know you’re going to love this. There’s a new kid on the block and we’re excited. “the generalist is an oasis of extraordinary spaces, places, design, decoration and the people behind them. Living in general. Homes in particular.”  Houses, design, people and places. It’s perfect. With access to the archives of the Content Agency, the generalist is a must read full of inspiring spaces like this South Fremantle home of artist Alessandra Rossi and her husband Piero Castellati, a building conservationist. The place is, as they say, their very own “work in progress” using alternative materials and building methods while still paying homage to the house’s original features.
