A 19th century apartment in Berlin

Posted on Tue, 3 May 2016 by KiM

I am completely head over heels in love with this 19th century apartment in Berlin designed and styled by Annabell Kutucu (in collaboration with Michael Schickinger). Throw in a bunch of cats, a few plants and I could very happily call this home. Forever.

Stalking a church conversion

Posted on Tue, 3 May 2016 by midcenturyjo

We are huge church conversion fans here on Desire to Inspire and this once derelict country chapel is one of my favourites. The former Catholic church was deconsecrated in 1993 and quickly fell into disrepair with the roof eventually collapsing and the remaining stone walls looking to quickly follow. Purchased by a local builder, the church has been lovingly restored with a sympathetic extension referencing it’s form and simplicity. There are even remnants of the original hand-painted friezes. Yes I know that the purists among you will say that it’s cheating when the new build is substantially larger than the conversion but I love how the tiny chapel has not been tampered with in an attempt to squeeze more in. Located in Yandoit in country Victoria, it is a short drive from the spa town of Daylesford. And, dear readers, it’s for sale. I wish I had the just under $1 million needed to purchase it and a reason to move to so far away. Link here while it lasts.

A bit of Nightwood

A few years ago Jo featured a gorgeous home filled with well worn, vintage treasures by Brooklyn’s Nightwood. I loved that post and thought I would feature a few more spaces of theirs that I adore. Unpretentious, lived-in, earthy, handmade loveliness (and do check out their shop – adore the bell jar sconce).

A beachside getaway in Portugal

Posted on Mon, 2 May 2016 by midcenturyjo

Is it the end of the weekend already? Another working week stretches before us and I’m daydreaming of a beachside getaway to help me make it through until next weekend. Let’s escape to Alentejo Beach House, a contemporary villa rental near Comporta on the beautiful Alentejo coast in Portugal. Three independent bungalows with beautiful ocean views and a communal main house for dining and socialising. Oh the sunsets and the sand and the water and the rolling dunes! Oh the fabulous Portuguese food and wine! Oh is it really a new working week already! Alentejo Beach House another hand-picked piece of paradise via Welcome Beyond.

When art makes all the difference

There is nothing overly exciting in the layout or architecture of this Swedish apartment for sale via Lagerlings, but throw in some large scale framed photography, gorgeous Thonet bentwood armchairs and an equally gorgeous dining table and classy herringbone hardwood floors and blah became BOOM!
