Monday’s pets on furniture

Posted on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 by KiM

If you’d like to send us photos to include in next week’s “pets on furniture” post, please ensure your photos follow our basic rules: First, the pet must be on a piece of furniture. And said piece of furniture must be clearly visible in the photo, so it takes center stage rather than your pet. Think of it more of a photo of a great piece of furniture that you want to show off…and your pet happens to be sitting on it. And second, the photo must be of decent quality. If it’s dark or fuzzy (from a camera phone) then it may not make the cut. Thanks! (Photos, your name, location and a brief description can be sent to  desiretoinspirekim[@]hotmail[.]com and PLEASE don’t send closeups of your pet!)

His name is PONCHO, he’s 2 months old.

This is a photo of Don (AKA The Don) at a cabin to the south of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada.
– Wendy

This is our new Vizsla puppy, William. He’s 14 weeks old. He’s our third Vizsla so we know what we’re in for.
Photo #1 – I was folding laundry the other day when I turned my back on William for a second. The camera happened to be close by. I’m thinking that this spot won’t work so well when he’s 60lbs!?!
Photo #2 – We decided that there was no point trying to keep him off the couches so we gave him his own. It’s officially Will’s chair.

I’m a big fan of your blog and wanted to share a picture of my dog Pucci with you. She’s fresh out from a trim and i shot her at work today on a chair that i believe is Danish from around the 50´s.
The sofa is a find from second hand store, just got it upholstered.
Niina (Helsinki, Finland)

Longtime fan of your blog and especially Pets on Furniture. Unfortunately, my Ragdoll kitty Lola doesn’t share my feelings and NEVER lets me take a photo of her, except this one that I managed to snap while she was reclining on my Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair. Aren’t they both so pretty?
– Maggie (Toronto)

Sophie typically isn’t allowed on the furniture, but it was her birthday the day I shot this photo. I think she knew she could get away with it.
Linda (Reno, Nevada)

This is Miss Kitty in all her obese glory on our vintage “mushroom chair”. It was my grandmothers from the 60’s and I adopted and recovered it in periwikle velvet. Here she is relaxing on our Portica Canopy Bed from Room and Board. She has been our buddy since we found her on the steet while I was in college, much like the rest of our furniture!
– Jessica

Our Short-Legged Wolf (mutt), Jenny, loves to both sit on –and shed on– most of the furniture in our home. These are some of her more common locations.
– Ryann and Alex (Redondo Beach, CA)

This is my cat Velcro. Sometimes he likes to appear like an object…
Ana (Bilbao, Spain)

This is Bridget snoozing on our favorite chair. Love the color, and that the soft material is makes for a fabulous cat nap. Always makes me smile when I see her loving it :: even though I will have to clean off her hair!!
– Lindsey

I’ve sent pictures of Murphy to you before, so I thought I’d send a couple more… I’m way too obsessed with this funny little dog.
– Pia

This is Ebby, my 14-year old Jack Russell Terrier. He loves to sleep on this chair, particularly in the morning….
– Kelly

A little bonus…
The folks at Pet Lounge Studios sent in product shots of their bambu pet hammock. What a great piece of pet furniture!

Random on a Sunday

Posted on Sun, 11 Sep 2011 by KiM

I spent yesterday at my sister’s cottage, enjoying what is likely the last decent weekend of the summer (although I did have jeans and a hoodie on for most of the day…this time of year is SO depressing). This means I did not have time to get a blog favourites post ready. Instead, I thought I would just keep this random with some items I have on hand.

First up, some photos I took Friday since I had the day off work and decided to spend a couple minutes rearranging some pieces in my living room. I LOVE this lamp that I bought at Homesense a while back and have had it crammed in a corner of my bedroom since it came home with me. I decided to move it next to the front door alongside my black Eames leather side chair, and switch out my Mexican tin mirror with my huge beaded rosary (also picked up in Mexico). Nothing too exciting but with no renovations on the horizon for this year I’m back to giving a sh*t what my house looks like. Because that Eames chair is a favourite of Felix, he has claimed the chair in the majority of these photos.

Despite the following action being out of focus, I thought it was hilarious that I managed to capture a little brawl.

Remember Tom’s fabulous apartment that I blogged on Wednesday? Well, his apartment was filmed for a promotional video for his building and he just received a link to it on YouTube. Check it out!

One last quick item: Yesterday I came across the following photo of a kitchen that I found rather odd. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an island shaped like this before. I’m thinking a large rectangular (read ‘normal’) island would have made more sense…

Reader request – alcove beds

Posted on Fri, 9 Sep 2011 by KiM

Heather sent us the following request: I have a fantasy in which I own a cottage and of course it has one (or more) alcove beds–you know, those beds that are built right into the wall, sometimes with drawers or a trundle underneath, sometimes with a window in the nook itself? Can you put together a collection of those? I would love to see it, if only to fuel the fantasy. I LOVE the idea of sleeping/reading nooks, tucked away in corners. And sleeping arrangements at a cottage is always a dilemma because the more the merrier, and squeezing in as many potential “beds” as possible is always a must. Plus, you can get away with being an adult and sleeping in a not-so-ordinary bed, which in my mind is a total bonus. Many of the photos I found are of children’s rooms but translate so well into ideal beds at a cottage. (P.S. Check out this post I did on napping nooks, and this one on couches in alcoves).

Reader request – bedroom with beige

Posted on Fri, 9 Sep 2011 by KiM

I have 2 reader requests for you guys today, and this first one comes from Kayla: I was wondering if you have any inspiration on how to combine beige and grey in one room – particularly in the bedroom. We have a custom-made beige built-in wardrobe (there when we moved in) that we can’t afford to replace. I don’t like it and so I’ve been stalling on decorating the bedroom since we moved in (over a year ago). I think I just need to work with it and so I’d like to mix in some greys to make it more contemporary. Any ideas? My first thought of course is paint it if you don’t like it. If you’re worried doing it yourself you could remove the doors and have them professionally sprayed. Otherwise, I think if it’s a soft beige I think adding alot of light grey, some beige in your bedding, and hints of black and white would work. If it’s a darker beige, I would maybe go for browns instead of grey. I found some photos that do both, including one with a black accent wall that you could consider to draw attention away from the wardrobe. The first photo is my favourite. Jewel toned accents (you could do more than a couple purple pillows) bring in that needed pop of colour. Hope this helps!
