A granny flat in the front yard

Posted on Fri, 4 Dec 2020 by midcenturyjo

“An existing single level studio space was replaced with a small self-contained dwelling comprising a ground floor living space, kitchenette and bathroom with a bedroom on a mezzanine level. The form was generated from the complexities of the available space between large existing trees, privacy and set-back requirements. A material palette was generated from a desire to reference the existing house while timber, steel and brickwork are used in a compositional form to introduce a previously lacking street presence. A plywood lined interior gives a sense of calm and cohesion to the multi-faceted form. “

We often tuck the granny flat out the back but look at the magic you can create when available space and its constraints force you to think outside the box. Love this little annex by Sydney-based Watershed Design.

A stylish neutral apartment

Posted on Thu, 26 Nov 2020 by midcenturyjo

Neutral doesn’t mean boring nor does it mean sitting on the fence when it comes to decorating choices. No. Neutral means calm sophistication, light, fresh, perhaps a little earthy. Neutral is a balance, an understanding. A designer’s home

“This is my home and my sanctuary. It is full of art, sculpture, textiles and objects that I have collected and curated and spans design eras, continents and my evolving design appreciation … The term ikigai is a Japanese concept which means ‘a reason for being.’ The word ‘ikigai’ is usually used to indicate the source of value in one’s life or the things that make one’s life worthwhile. Aside from my loved ones, my ikigai is design. I am a curator, creator and forager.”

A stone’s throw

“Across the road from Little Manly beach, this timber clad beach house was designed for clients who have a love for tropical plantation homes of yesteryear. It is adorned by rare vintage Moroccan rugs and cane collectables.”

From the vintage cane (hello pretzel chairs) to the cascading plants and fabulous staircase there is so much to love about this relaxed beachside home in Little Manly on Sydney’s Northern Beaches by Jase Sullivan. AND it’s only a stone’s throw to the beach!

Neutral boho renovation in London

Posted on Mon, 16 Nov 2020 by midcenturyjo

Yes, yes I know it’s another property from The Modern House but I’m using the same excuse as last time :p Light filled and lovely with its restrained neutral colour palette, raw materials and contemporary living within a Victorian shell. I’d be happy to spend my days in lock down tending to a thriving indoor jungle. Walsingham Road, London E5 for sale via The Modern House.
