Balancing L.A. chic with New England charm

Posted on Thu, 7 Dec 2023 by KiM

Vintage and contemporary pieces mingle with fresh finishes in an elegant, relaxed, and eclectic abode designed for a young family of four in Los Angeles’s Mar Vista neighborhood. Interweaving subtle nods to the clients’ Vermont roots, the studio’s design direction for the project highlights the juxtaposition of raw, relaxed, and elegant materials, balancing L.A. chic with New England charm. Our renovation included a reinterpretation of paint and finishes throughout. Softly limewashed walls imbue subtle variations with a matte, velvety effect, laying the foundation of our redesign. We paired this with wide plank oak floors, cipollino tirreno marble countertops, a bespoke fireplace design, and a top-to-bottom kitchen overhaul. We curated a mix of French 1970s vintage, distinguished burlwood, woven wicker, cosy prints, humble plywood, plush mohair, and timeless walnut.
A really fun and eclectic blend of styles designed by Stefani Stein. She really nailed the combination of contemporary and vintage and it comes together really cohesively. Why settle for just one style when you can mix it up and make it work? Photos: Sam Frost; Styling: Lisa Rowe.

Curvaceous

Toronto based designer Shauna Walton did a number on this modern home with lots of golden wood, neutral colour palette and tons of curves, as seen in furniture (that dining set is to die for), doorways, the simplest yet sexiest stove hood cover, bathroom vanities and so much more. The result is a stunning and warm family home. Photos: Lauren Miller.

L.A. French Eclectic

Posted on Wed, 6 Dec 2023 by midcenturyjo

Built in 1924 this Los Angeles house embodies French Eclectic style, popular post-WWI with returned soldiers. Influenced by Normandy architecture, it showcases steep roofs, casement windows, French doors and a mix of timber and stucco. Interior designs would often blend Tudor and Spanish influences. Jessica Helgerson Interior Design redesigned the kitchen and bathrooms, adding a ground-floor guest suite, refreshing and furnishing the house. New features reference the old and the rooms are an eclectic mix of furniture reflecting the family’s lifestyle.

A resounding love for textiles and old school craftsmanship is evident throughout Christina‘s sophisticated yet refined spaces. Her layered mix of clean and contemporary with eclectic and antique results in projects that feel authentic, intentional and curated over time. Having lived in both New York and London, those experiences informed her bold design eye and exposed her to the world of art, fashion and European interiors. Known for her playful sensibility, the most pivotal part of Christina’s aesthetic is a fusion of elegance with livability.
Beautiful space. I am dying over that massive kitchen with the brick stove surround in the middle. WHOA.

A kitchen with lots of white and wood

What a wonderful kitchen this is!!! So bright with all the white, then add in that whole back section clad in wood and it takes this space to a whole other level of awesome. The warmth the wood adds really makes it feel cozy and lived in. The perfect family kitchen. Designed by April Tomlin Interiors. Photos: Paige Rumore.
