Type St Apartment, a 35m2 one bedroom 70’s unitt subtly reimagined by architect Jack Chen of Melbourne-based Tsai Design. Cleverly designed to change between office and home.

“Located in the old Toy Factory Lofts in Downtown Los Angeles, the 850 sf studio loft underwent a full interior architectural remodel as well as re-space planning, and custom designed millwork. There was a request for a separate semi private bedroom area, new custom designed kitchen and larger bathroom. New entry wall and dividing custom shelving unit was placed to create privacy and allow for porosity and visual connectivity to the rest of the space. Custom details and an existing concrete column was re purposed as a back drop for a custom bench and side table.”

Hands up who daydreams of living in an industrial style loft. OK I’d probably have to ditch the husband and the large dog to make the dream come true or at least keep the space looking so wonderful. Toy Factory Loft by Mass Studio.

“An extension to a single fronted Victorian Terrace located within Melbourne’s inner-north. Storybook House is a study of inner city living, this project optimises the existing footprint to create a functional small family home with a series of multi-use spaces. The building is curated to frame views into a series of open garden spaces – including internal courtyards, a roof garden and borrowing the landscape from the adjacent park and outlook to Melbourne’s skyline.”

Add in sustainable design principles, clever storage solutions and reference to the local community in materials and shape the result is collaborative, innovative, and pragmatic yet playful design. Storybook House by Folk Architects.
