This kitchen in a 1920s apartment in Stockholm featured in Elle Decoration Sweden is absolutely gorgeous. It was totally renovated but they maintained the peeling and cracked ceiling, added some Ikea cabinetry mixed with vintage pieces, Carrera marble, tiled walls, funky lighting… The resulting space looks like it has been there since the 20’s. I love vintage kitchens. There is something so comforting and unpretentious about them, filled with character and they look even better with scratches in the butcher block, wine stains on the counters, and pots and pans hanging from any surface with a hook. I thought I would do a round-up of vintage kitchens (love the ones with industrial touches too) in the hopes of inspiring anyone who has a vintage kitchen to maybe reconsider updating it. Because you may regret it.

I spotted this bathroom above while scouring Pinterest one day looking for brass inspiration for my kitchen. It is what solidified my decision to go with brass hardware and faucet. Shanti and Courtney of Brooklyn-based Indigo + Ochre are responsible for this beautiful bathroom and the other spaces below. Brass seems to be a favourite of theirs too, as well as incorporating ethnic finds in their designs. The combination results in timeless spaces filled with character and soul.

The folks of Toronto design firm Prototype Design Lab sent along photos of a project they recently completed that I had to share. This is a family cottage in northern Ontario (McKellar) and it is unlike any ‘cottage’ I have ever seen. When I think cottage I envision pine panelled walls, a rustic kitchen and some antlers on the wall. This cottage IS NOT THAT. We designed this cottage for a family that loves to entertain, cook, and eat. Their whole lifestyle is based around the kitchen, so right off the bat we knew that this space had to be functional, but incredible. The kitchen starts out like a restaurant kitchen, with durable, stainless steel surfaces, but is designed to be warm and eclectic with a great mix of modern & vintage fixtures; pendant lamps, floating shelves and stunning blackened steel-framed chalkboard panels acting as cabinet doors. Then there are some really warm elements such as a reclaimed barn wood wall & ceiling feature, marble counter tops, glass shelving & and reclaimed wine crate table. The palette of the space suggest vintage, contemporary and industrial all at the same time!

OK so I’m not sure it’s a farm just a farm house but what a perfect home to grow a family. Layers of living. Life’s little treasures strewn here and there. The old and the new. Gumboots and four legged friends and concrete floors. Plaid and beams and bingo cards. Just bliss. Kent farmhouse from jj Locations.
