Fire and water

Posted on Tue, 8 Feb 2022 by midcenturyjo

I’m looking for garden inspiration at the moment and this stone fire pit anchored by a water feature is just what I’m looking for. The old weathered stone softened by lush informal greenery and the stillness of the water broken only by goldfish draws you down into this quiet spot in the garden. Uneven terrain is levelled by decking punctuated by cutouts for the growing trees. Calm, quiet, serene. Bondi garden by Spirit Level.

Up on the roof

It’s stylish and chic up under the eaves. What else would we expect from Paris-based design firm Double G? Clever spatial planning, attention to detail and pops of colour. But the added bonus of a roof deck? Yes please.

A modern lodge in the Scottish Highlands

Posted on Wed, 26 Jan 2022 by KiM

This definitively is not your average holiday retreat. And what a stunner it is! Designed by Suzy Hoodless. Six years in the making, our design for this remote Highland lodge softens striking modern architecture with colours inspired by the local landscape. The client, who is Scandinavian, wanted a holiday retreat where she and her family could enjoy spectacular views of the neighbouring loch – and the lodge’s rambling gardens, landscaped by Jinny Blom. As a means of softening the architecture, we took inspiration from the colours of the local sky and landscape, composing a muted palette of dove grey, dusky pink, pale blue and soft green. Rare Scandinavian furniture – including a Finn Juhl Chieftain sofa – needed to be shipped from Stockholm and Copenhagen. But the obstacles were more than made up for by the experiences we had – not least arriving in this spectacular place at the estate’s own train station, with the family flashing torches to make a request stop.

A hidden gem

The designer calls the project Printemps or Spring. I call it the jewel box and hidden within is such a precious treasure for Paris’ 17th arrondissement, a lush almost tropical garden. By Laurence Simoncini Décoration.

I am in love with every detail of this Georgian townhouse designed by London-based Barlow & Barlow. A bunch of fun colours (as they do), tons of great built-in storage in almost every room, a to die for outdoor courtyard, a cool velvet wrapped cinema room in the basement (I need this in my next home), so bold and liveable and such great energy.
