Been busy lately

Posted on Tue, 7 Aug 2007 by KiM

I have been busy the last month or trying to get my backyard in some sort of reasonable state. Thanks to my dad’s HUGE help, it’s finally done (well, about 95% done). I hired someone to build the fence and the deck, and the rest was done by my dad and I on my Mondays off and my boyfriend helped on weekends. My dad rocks. For an old guy, he sure worked his ass off. So I figured I had to toot my own horn a bit and show you the results. (Since it’s into August, the planting is at a minimum and we don’t have much furniture/accessories but it’s a start).

Outdoor spaces

When planning my post for today, the only logical choice seemed to be outdoor spaces. Reason being, I am spending all weekend and Monday (I have the day off) landscaping my backyard. Yesterday we dug out the whole yard to remove the “grass” (I use quotes because it should be grass but instead is mostly weeds). Today my parents are coming over to help, and we’ll be laying stones over the entire yard and adding some garden areas. It’s a pretty small yard thankfully so this shouldn’t be too difficult. I just have to get through the day without killing my father and/or my boyfriend. Both are not the funnest people to do projects with. Wish me luck.

I am still itching to get out and do some gardening but my fence and deck have yet to be built (any day now). So I am getting my fix through beautiful photos such as these…

Andy Sturgeon garden design

I have SO got the itch to do some landscaping to my miniscule property. I have someone coming in a week or so to finish my fence and build a new deck in the backyard. As a result, I am always looking for ideas for outdoor spaces. I love modern landscapes, and Andy Sturgeon’s website was very inspirational. “Andy Sturgeon Garden Design has emerged as a leading design practice earning a reputation for creating stylish modern gardens that are a fusion of contemporary design and natural materials. Planting often features heavily and ranges from striking architectural schemes through to soft, naturalistic styles. Lighting, sculpture and furniture are frequently integral to the design.”

Outdoor rooms part 2

As the weather warms up for most of you it’s time to take another look at using outdoor spaces. Where I live in sunny subtropical Queensland we use our outdoor rooms all year round. Even in the southern parts of Australia there is only a brief period of the year where we don’t live outside. The fresh air beckons. And if you don’t have a permanent space to dine, laze and while away the day then a rug some pillows a garden set or hammock can extend your living space.
