The Cross Design – Laneway house

Posted on Thu, 26 Sep 2013 by KiM

I adore this Vancouver home designed by The Cross Design. It’s spunky and feminin and ethnic and OMG the doses of pink throughout! It makes me love pink again. And makes me smile. This is a happy home.

P.S. By the time this post publishes, I should be an aunt for the fourth time. Congrats Jen and Dave! 🙂

Arsenal B47

A couple of weeks ago I featured Swiss architect Ralph Germann…but it turns out I used some photos I shouldn’t have. OOPS! I was kindly sent lots of juicy photos of 2 projects I am allowed to feature (thanks Ralph and Christiane!), so here is one of them. I LOVE this home because it has the “modern cabin” vibe I desperately want for my new house.

Arsenal B47The owner of the arsenal wanted to convert this former Swiss army building, constructed during the Second World War, into a habitable space. Ralph Germann’s transformation involved inserting a glass cube into the old structure, an option which meant he didn’t have to touch the patina of the walls, and was able to preserve the roof and some historic details such as the “charge maximum 1500 kg au m2”[maximum load 1500 kg/m2] sign on the wall. Whilst wishing to preserve this testimony to the past, the architect retained only simple materials – noble and solid – including larch, slate, glass and metal. And by interpreting them using clean, pure lines, he has given the chalet a timeless feel. To avoid sliding into an atmosphere of austerity, Ralph Germann has added an unexpected touch of colour behind the cloakroom door: a bold shade of fuchsia. This design, functional above all else, places the emphasis on light and space. To achieve the second, the architect has designed another cube – but in wood this time. Set within the heart of the glass structure, it houses the WCs, cupboards, and even the bed, which folds up when not in use. This optimizes space in this area, which measures only 49 m2.

Tickled pink

Posted on Fri, 31 May 2013 by KiM

My twin sister spent all of last weekend painting her living room (formerly an open concept living and dining room that was a bold chartreuse/acid green) a pale pink after lots of coaxing from me. I LOOOOVE pale pink as a wall colour. It’s a bold (but not so bold) alternative to white or cream or grey. I have it in my bedroom and despite the space taking on several transformations since the pink hit the walls, it always works. As long as it’s a subtle pink that is. (P.S. A tip – I couldn’t find a pink that I thought was pale enough so I picked out the shade I liked – Benjamin Moore’s Elephant Pink – and ended up having it mixed at 25% strength). It seems to work with any accent colours too but I especially love it with white and black. My next house will likely end up all white/black but I’m thinking pink needs to be somewhere. Anyway, I did a round up of some beautiful spaces in pale pink. Happy Friday!

In the pink

The new week has begun and plans are being hatched. So much going on but I’m in the pink. And who does the perfect pink? Why stylist Marcus Hay of course. Lovely lolly pink with a touch of retro and a twist of quirk. Happy smiley face pink.

Clean, contemporary lines with a base of neutrals strengthened with sophisticated colour choices. A simple, modern nursery layered with texture and pattern with surprising but not overpowering orange and pink colour accents. A room that is functional and stylish. Not at all twee. An apartment which plays with scale and texture softly embellished with pastel blues. Beautiful interiors by Chantal Spanicciati of Meta Interiors.
