Fun house

Posted on Tue, 13 Aug 2013 by KiM

In keeping with my small homes theme today, check out this super creative 40 sq m holiday apartment in France designed by Italian firm Studio UdA. The design also met the client’s request to have a spacious lounge area and two separate sleeping quarters, all with sea views. The reference to beach huts and self-built cabanas has led to the creation of lightweight structures inside the apartment; they are easy to assemble, relatively inexpensive and can also be set up according to the inhabitant’s taste and whims, while constantly offering views towards the outside. This is really cool – and I love how the bedrooms can be left open or sealed off depending on their use. Fun colours too! (See more of UdA’s work here)

On the straight and narrow

Clearly land in Japan is at a premium. Someone saw this tiny piece of land above and decided it was fit for a house! That’s crazy talk. Makes my 12′ wide house feel enormous. Too bad there’s no furniture in place – I’d love to see how the owners work it. Designed by architects Katsutoshi Sasaki + Associates

Living small – Alan Chu

I found this compact São Paulo apartment designed by Brazilian architect Alan Chu and had to share. It’s got micro square footage but Alan made such great use of limited space. A single wall was converted into storage for both the kitchen and living room, which kept the majority of those spaces free for basic furnishings. I think he and the owner like subway tiles. 🙂 The spiral staircase is compact and a gorgeous architectural feature. Overall, a really cool space. (Via Casa Vogue Brasil)

Dreamy details

Thank you to Stella for sending us the link to this absolutely incredible apartment for sale in Sweden. Of course I love the black and white colour scheme but it’s the architectural details of this small, 70 sq m dwelling located in a building built in 1891 that really makes it spectacular. Soaring ceilings, massive windows and moldings that give me heart palpitations. WOW! (Link here)

Field of dreams

Like a child’s drawing. A rudimentary shape recognisable as a house. It wasn’t there yesterday. Now settling softly in a new mown field with walls closed, little hint of what awaits within. Throw open the walls and breath deep. A simple structure, a simple life. Simply a dream. The ÁPH80 portable home by Spanish firm ÁBATON.
