With 100 categories the A’ Design Award and Competition is the worlds’ largest design competition. But it is not just an award. It is an indicator of quality and perfection in design, recognized worldwide, bringing your design front and centre before design companies and professionals. Categories such as Interior Space and Exhibition Design; Architecture, Building and Structure Design; Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design; Lighting Products and Lighting Projects Design; Arts, Crafts and Ready-Made Design; Landscape Planning and Garden Design and so many more. The trophy, of course, an invitation to the gala night, a certificate of quality, inclusion in the prestigious A’ Design Award and Competition exhibition and the yearly ResultBook but even more importantly press, PR, introduction to industry professionals and companies and international exposure. The fame, the prestige, the recognition and so much more.

The A’ Design Award & Competition has ended for another year. Entries have been judged by an international jury panel of scholars, professionals and media members. The prize? The trophy, of course, a certificate of quality, inclusion in the prestigious A’ Design Award and Competition exhibition and the yearly ResultBook but even more importantly press, PR, introduction to industry professionals and companies and international exposure. The fame, the prestige, the recognition and so much more. Yes finally the winners have been announced.  Can you imagine the scale of this competition?  2094 Winners from 108 countries in 104 different design disciplines.

Here are some of my favourite winners for 2020 from the following categories: Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design; Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award: Architecture, Building and Structure Design; Lighting Products and Projects.

I think what I liked the most about these entries was the interesting use of natural materials and the almost organic lines of most. You can see all the winners here.

Once again an emphasis on organic, sinuous lines as well as an exploration of mass and voids, positive and negative space, monumental and intimate spaces.

From organic lines (and organic principles) to brutal and monolithic there is so much to explore in this year’s winners.

I love the exploration of what is light, the shape of light and changing direction of beams. As for the play on an hour glass to time a light … what fun!

A’ Design Award and Competitions are organized and awarded annually and internationally in a wide range of categories. Every year projects that focus on innovation, technology, design and creativity are awarded with the A’ Award. While realized projects find opportunities to get published, reach new markets and meet a wide range of buyers for their existing products, the organization also helps the creative minds and startups to meet with the business people to realize their product ideas. One of my weaknesses when it comes to decorating my home is wall art. I love the power of art and have so much of it scattered throughout my home. This includes a small gallery wall in my living room of still life florals, a random assortment of a gallery wall in my dining room, and another random themed but similar toned grouping in my bedroom. And then plenty of other pieces scattered throughout. I’m always stoked to learn of new art sources, and Fine Art America is a new one to me. Lucky for me the network at my day job went down today for almost 2 hours and I spent the entire time scouring this amazing art source checking out all they have to offer (I could have easily spent 2 days!). They are one of the world’s largest art marketplaces that helps over 500K independent artists sell their art online. And what they have is everything you could possibly want, from the styles and themes to what format they are available in.

By everything I mean posters, canvas prints, framed prints (you choose your orientation, print size, frame, mat colour and width, and paper!), art prints, metal prints (printed on 1/16″ thick aluminum), acrylic prints (a favourite of mine to get really bold colours to pop, printed directly onto the back of a 1/4″ thick sheet of clear acrylic), wood prints (printed directly onto a sheet of 3/4″ thick maple wood using archival inks designed to last for 75 years without fading or loss of color) and tapestries (lightweight microfiber with hemmed edges available in three sizes).

Here is one where I chose framed print, and selected a mat and frame. I love that the site shows you how the art will look with each selection made.

I think tapestries are often overlooked when shopping for art. They are so versatile. Hang it on the wall as art, get some clips and a rod and use it as a curtain, throw it over an unsightly table etc. etc. Floral tapestries are my favourite.

A Guide To Make Your Roof Last Longer

You do not always have to spend a lot of money to keep your roof well maintained. Regular cleaning and dusting regularly can also go a long way in maintaining the longevity of the roof. Here are some ways you can keep a well-maintained roof for a long time.

●    Regular Inspection

You must regularly inspect your roof to check if something is damaged or needs your attention. Additionally, before and after winter, you need to do a thorough checkup. Often during this time, your roof is left with some cracks and breaks. Start your inspection at the ceiling and go around the roof. Check for rust on metallic surfaces on your roof and make sure that flashing is working properly. The general examination will allow you to identify the repair and damage in a timely manner. This way, you can treat the issue before it gets worse.

●     Properly Insulate The Attics And Cathedral Ceilings

Properly insulating ceilings of attics and cathedral can help in avoiding ice dams. This can result in expensive leaks, especially in the areas where your roofing planes are connecting with each other. When the top layer of the snow melts on the roofs, it flows down.

However, if the recessed lighting in the cathedral ceiling is not insulated adequately, the heat melts the ice and snow from beneath. The moisture can get collected into the nail holes and significantly damage the decking of the roof. To prevent this issue, a self-adhesive membrane is installed to protect certain areas of the roof against water and ice.

●     Remove The Collected Leaves

If you are living in a tropical region, you have to tread the extra miles to take care of your roof. During the fall season, trees shed a lot of leaves, thereby clogging your roof entirely. Even if you install a gutter guard, this issue can continue to cause a problem. This is why you should remove the leaves on a daily basis.

Although it can be a tedious task, the results can be rewarding. You can simply use a leaf flower as it will get the job done without having to put too much effort. Once you have removed the leaves, mulch them in the garden so that the wind does not blow them back to the top.

●    Take Out The Blistering Shingles

Shingles on the roof may get blistered either due to trapped moisture or an inadequately ventilated roof. Blistered shingles may not concern people who keep granules. However, if you notice blisters, it is recommended to replace them before they pop. And. when the shingles are exposed to the UV rays, they will lose more granules. When you are replacing the shingles, consider the weather. This is because when it is extremely cold, the shingles are likely to get cracked, whereas, during intense summer, the sealants may become challenging to break. Moreover, do not power-wash the shingles as the concentrated spray can loosen their granules. This will cause damages that are not covered by the warranty. Instead, use a leaf blower or broom to remove the dirt and moss.

Final Thoughts

You do not want to be faced with a situation where you have to put an entirely new roof over the house. With time, the roof is likely to experience some damage and repair; however, there are ways you can increase the life of your roof. When it comes to maintenance of your roof, be proactive. If you see small issues, take some time to fix them before they turn into something huge. Lastly, with the above tips, you will certainly be able to prolong the life of your roof.
