Working on a Saturday

It’s like I say week in week out. If you have to drag yourself into work on a weekend it helps if it’s somewhere stylish. Facile by Studio Life/Style.

Villa Livia

I had to share another property available to rent from designer Jacques Garcia. This too is an absolutely stunning home in Sicily but this time set amongst a much more barren landscape than the previous one I shared. And like the last one, I’d be kicking and screaming on my way out. How could you ever leave this?

Solid as stone

“The original Stone House was built in 1780 and was updated with a second structure in 1877. The addition and multiple renovations left the house with layers of finishes and a memory of how the home accommodated people’s needs through time. Our sensitive approach recognized that we are one piece in the building’s long life. While there was a drastic reorganization of the interior spaces, we took care to respect the building’s thick stone structure.”

I love the thought of this renovation being just one piece of the building’s long life. To me a good renovation is all about respect. Retaining important features and reinstating the lost while carefully creating a home for modern living. This 19th century stone house outside Callicoon, New York is a triumph by Brooklyn-based General Assembly.

A 19th century former corner store in Sydney

What was once a Victorian Georgian corner store is now a modern, 2-story, 4 bedroom home with original and new details like sandstone walls, travertine floor pavers, mother of pearl mosaic tile, leathered quartzite, venetian plaster and stained glass floral reliefs. This is an honourable example of how to renovate a traditional space whilst transforming it for modern times. By YSG. (Photos: Prue Ruscoe)

A 15th century restored Irish castle

This magical place is Kilcoe Castle, a 15th century castle located on Roaring Water Bay on the south western coast of Ireland. It was purchased by actor Jeremy Irons several years ago and took 6 years of painstaking renovations to get it to the state it is in today. It is absolutely beautiful, filled with art and treasures from the actor’s travels (carpets from Morocco, a Nepalese yoke, an old Roman-style threshing board, a fiddle he had made in Slovakia, a life-size antique wooden horse that he found in the Cotswolds…).
