Southwestern vibes

Posted on Thu, 19 Feb 2015 by KiM

I could not help but think of my upcoming trip when I spotted this ranch the other day. Located in Bernal, New Mexico with views of Starvation Peak, it is quintessentially southwestern. It is a new build, designed by Caroline Dooley, and made to appear over 100 years old. The wood flooring is to die for with those colour variations, and the beamed ceilings are a fabulous rustic touch. Like the home I featured earlier, this too would make a superb vacation spot.

Hess Hoen

Oh dear lord help me! I don’t know where to start. I can’t find the words to describe how much I love this harbour side home in Sydney by Hess Hoen. Old meets new. Layers of texture and simple luxury. Stone and oak and linen and tile. Oh my! It has me flustered in the very best way.

Kuća Kamena

It’s Wednesday. The middle of a long working week. Hump day. Need a little daydream to make it through the day, the week? Time to take a virtual holiday to the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. To a simple stone house, to Kuća Kamena in Novigrad (of Croatia’s four Novigrads this one is the one that is famous for not being famous). To the home of artist and designer Boris Kajmak and, if you like, yours for a little while. Rustic beauty in a beautiful part of the world.

Beach house in an olive grove

The holidays are over and now I need a holiday to recup. Actually, I just need a holiday to get out of this godforsaken cold weather. I would be more than happy to visit this wonderful home by Spanish architect Toni Gironès Saderra. It is located on a hillside in Cadaqués, Girona, Spain, and has 15 olive trees on the property. The home is simple yet stunning, and while not much going on with the decor in these photos, my brain is on overdrive thinking of the possibilities. Yes, I could spend winters here. Easily.

Block

A tight budget may have dictated the use of simple, inexpensive building materials but architects Carter Williamson have taken the humble concrete block and created an elegant 2 storey house in Camperdown, Sydney that not only respects its Victorian era neighbours but provides a modern shell with character and sense of space and light that belies the hefty building block.
