A 17th century barn conversation in Waiblingen, Germany, Atelier S is a studio and exhibition space. Rustic elements were retained and restored (the building was in danger of immenent collapse) while a modern staircase sculpture leads to the second floor. By Stuttgart based COASToffice… bringing together the past and the present, rustic and sleek.

Twin Farms

This post is pushing all of my rustic buttons let me tell ya. Meaghan emailed us about this place, as she likes to hunt for the perfect getaway cabin this time of year. I hear ya Meaghan! She found these cottages, Twin Farms, located in Vermont and what a vacation this would be. It consists of a farmhouse (dating from the late 1700s), 5 cottages were added in the 90s, and with more additions the accommodations are now 20. It’s stunning, as you will see from this selection of photos from several of the cottages.

GASS

Individual designs that fit individual needs. Sustainable, contemporary, with an emphasis on local materials and respect for site. Two projects from GASS Architecture Studios, located in Johannesburg & Cape Town, South Africa. The first, Westcliff Pavilion is a steel framed structure located on a ridge in Johannesburg. The two bedroom dwelling lightly touches the ground while its floating stone wall is a play on the local stone building materials and the notion of wall as sturdy and grounded. All in all a beautiful modernist box that sits softly in its surrounds.

The second project is the renovation of a flat in the Johannesburg suburb of Killarnery. Working within the existing constraints of the building but celebrating the beauty of its wall of windows, it is the new kitchen, though, that is a triumph. Oak and black tile ground the room and play against the light bright views from the windows.

Within reach of paradise

Another project by Auckland architects Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects. I couldn’t help myself. I love their work. New Zealand is such a beautiful country with architecture that celebrates the land of the long white cloud. This alteration and addition to a Queenstown house sits comfortably within its stunning surrounds. Stone and glass and metal. Areas for communing and others for cocooning. Luxury and practicality and all with that view. God’s own country I believe.

A house for sale in Provence

Posted on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 by KiM

You may remember Fabien from this post of his home back in ’09. He emailed us recently, hoping we could help his friends out. You see, Olivier & Caroline are selling their absolutely gorgeous, renovated home in St Maurice de Cazevieille, Provence in the South of France. What a dream! It took them 8 months to execute this green renovation, using original materials such as lime and sand, wood and stone and combining them with very modern appliances to update this very rustic home. This couple are now looking to sell as they have discovered another project. So if any of our readers are on the hunt for the home of their dreams in the South of France, look no further! More details here. (P.S. I’m obsessed with the cat photo – go figure).

Seems like Olivier & Caroline had their work cut out for them….
