Reader request – exposed brick

Posted on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 by KiM

Today’s reader request comes from Erick: I wanted to know if you could help me find ideas for designing/decorating an apartment with exposed brick wall. I think I’d like to see more of a modern take rather then a rustic one. I’m open to the industrial look also. Jo and I are HUGE fans of exposed brick. H U G E. And I think exposed brick works with any type of decor. Smooth and sleek modern furnishings add an interesting contrast to the rough and raw edge of brick walls. And industrial mixed with brick just makes total sense. WORK IT ERICK!

Alex Profit

French photographer Alex Profit emailed us recently about his new web site tastyhotels.com (an al dente selection of hotels, guests house, self-catering…), but I was too awe-struck with his portfolio to really get into it (…yet – perhaps that’s for a future post). His composition is mesmerizing, the spaces are simple and gorgeous and I love the mostly muted colour palettes. P.S. As soon as I finish typing this sentence I am putting that first faucet photo into my bathroom inspiration folder.

Coates Design

Coates Design is an architecture firm based in Seattle that specializes in sustainable design. Their vision: is that buildings, when thoughtfully designed, will uplift the spirit, nourish the mind and contribute to the health of our bodies while respecting the environment in which they are placed. I would certainly be uplifted if any of the spaces below belonged to me. 🙂 Matthew Coates and his crew are clearly lovers of wood, concrete, and W I N D O W S!!

Maurice Padovani

Sometimes I take a sharp breath and release it slowly and softly through my pursed lips as I’m web surfing. Sometimes I find a place that is so perfect for me that there are no words. Sometimes my dreams come to life and jump from my computer screen. Sometimes I find an interior designer that has “it”. Maurice Padovani has looked inside my mind and teased out a house that ticks all my boxes without ever having met me. There is one problem though. He built it in Marseilles, France not Australia. I’d have thought if he could read my mind without ever having met me he could get that right too. Oh well I’ll just have to move to the South of France. Life is tough 😉

P.S. For those who found the OSB (oriented strand board) a little overpowering in a previous post, here it is again only “whitewashed”.

House of Honey

Tamara Kaye-Honey is a Canadian now living in Los Angeles who, like many interior designers/decorators, started out in fashion. She’s been in the business of interiors since 2003 and her eclectic designs are punchy, witty and dramatic. Tamara’s work combines high and low, old and new pieces (love that!) to create modern spaces that are not so serious. I’m a big fan. (Check out House of Honey, her online shop stocked with to-die-for, must-have items!)
