More from MEME

Posted on Fri, 19 Feb 2016 by midcenturyjo

It seems this week that Kim and I have been travelling the same design path. Our focus has been on fabulous Australian design. This East St Kilda House by Melbourne-based interior design and architectural practice MEME is yet another stellar example. Clean, modern lines with a palette of whites and greys warmed by wood. The recurring arch motive references the building’s original Spanish Mission style with new windows and doors in black steel adding another layer to the link. Tactile, robust but strikingly contemporary.

Stalking in the same street part 1

Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016 by midcenturyjo

First stalking of the year and I’m excited. (Beats chest. Bellows loudly. Frightens neighbour’s children.) I’m in Rozelle, Sydney and but it’s not just one home I’m stalking. It’s two. Two houses, same suburb, same street, separated by scant meters. I’m partial to both, can’t afford either but my love affair with small heritage cottages with architect extensions continues. First the sandstone house. Link here while it lasts.

Elwood House is a single storey, bayside residence that has been renovated to better suit its location and the needs of a growing family. Voids and skylights create sun-lit internal spaces that are balanced by natural timber, white and grey surfaces. Large living spaces open to sunny courtyard gardens with outdoor entertaining areas and a pool, giving this home a relaxed and inviting feel.

Love it! The light, the clean, modern lines, those steel framed windows and doors, the seamless transition from inside to out and once you’re outside… just as impressive. Elwood House by Melbourne-based Neil Architecture.

Window drama

A good window frames the room every time. Love the drama of these spaces by Contour Interior Design.

Déjà vu

I knew it was familiar. I knew I’d seen it before. Not the living area. No, turn around. It’s the kitchen. And that table. And those windows, those glorious windows. We all love clicking through the listings on our favourite location sites. It’s a bit like real estate stalking. I’d never seen a house before that I recognised though until I saw this place. They filmed Jamie’s 30-Minute Meals here. I must confess that my attention was only half given over to Jamie Oliver’s cooking whenever I watched the program. I was scoping out the kitchen and trying to imagine what was outside those wonderful windows. Now I know. Faith House via Airspace Locations.
