Working on a Saturday

Posted on Sat, 13 May 2017 by midcenturyjo

Week after week I chant my mantra. If you have to drag yourself into work on a Saturday it helps if it’s somewhere stylish. (It also helps if it’s the designer’s own office space.) Studio 45 in Manly, Sydney is the home of Marston Architects. Two work zones connected by a plywood cube housing the kitchen, all contained within a heritage listed terrace house.

A Victorian with a bit of modern funk

Posted on Fri, 12 May 2017 by midcenturyjo

Before the weekend gets going (mine’s a bit nuts – new foster kitty arrived Wednesday), how about a glimpse into another project by Jeff Schlarb. This grand Victorian was built in 1893 and needed a bit of a facelift. With some stunning original features maintained and some modern elements added, this home is now rockin’ a new era.

Whimsical art in an elegant home

San Francisco designer Jeff Schlarb describes his style as simply “rad elegance”, and that is precisely how I would describe this home he designed for an art collecting client. The artwork is bold and quirky and very much whimsical, and he managed to pair it with bold, modern, elegant furnishings for an overall look of cohesive radness. LOVE!!!

Stalking in Melbourne

Posted on Fri, 12 May 2017 by midcenturyjo

You know how I often jest about packing my bags and moving into the houses I virtually stalk? This time I really am booking a flight, knocking on the door and politely, but very firmly, muscling my way in. Designed in 2000 by architect Allan Powell and with gardens by Eckersley Garden Architecture (2014), I’m at a loss for words. I wouldn’t change a thing if it was mine accept my address. It’s perfect… well almost. I won’t be able to afford it. Listing here while it lasts.

A farmhouse in pastels and white

Posted on Thu, 11 May 2017 by midcenturyjo

No, this doesn’t look like your typical farmhouse. A Scandinavian vibe with lots of white, grey and pastels with wood accents make this modern, clean and bright. Styling: Laura Melling + design: Scott Posno + photos: Janis Nicolay.
