There’s colour and pattern, quirk and personality, new and old. It’s lived in and layered and so much fun. Why would you be a minimalist when you can surround yourself with so much character? I couldn’t choose just one home by Portland, Oregon based interior designer Max Humphrey so I cherry picked my favs.

Hotel Tivoli

I need to take a trip to Tivoli, NY and stay in this fabulously decorated hotel. I adore the simplicity, playfulness, bold colours, quirky furniture and that grey trim everywhere!! Hotel Tivoli and its accompanying farm-to-table restaurant The Corner is a century-old building situated in the historic town of Tivoli, New York. Owned by painters Brice and Helen Marden, the property is filled with an eclectic collection of furniture, lighting and art. Reunion Goods & Services worked with the Mardens to infuse the space with lightness punctuated by individualistic moments. The design included a restaurant space with a custom marble bar, two dining rooms and ten unique guest rooms. The identity for the hotel and restaurant was a direct collaboration with Brice whose drawings are paired with reserved text evocative of gallery wall captions. This typography was carried throughout the space, with hand-painted numerals on doors and sparing use of color.

Stalking leftovers

Posted on Thu, 4 May 2017 by midcenturyjo

Yes I admit it. I’m still stalking real estate listings looking for knockout homes. I admit that I’m not in the market for a new house. I’m just a voyeur, I have to know what’s going on behind the curtains, what we in Australia call a “sticky beak”. There is one problem though. I’m fussy. Not quite right, love the bones but ditch the furniture, bad photos, I need more photos please! Can’t quite put my finger on it listings with something that has me nodding “yes”. This week there are new builds and old house renovations, family homes and inner city pads, There is even a tiny cottage where it’s more about the street than the house. Bilateral house by Audax

Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017 by KiM

I am completely blown away by this project I stumbled upon by Toronto-based architecture firm Audax. The exterior is pretty and original to the ‘hood and then the second you walk in the front door BOOM!!! Nothing that you could have imagined. I am especially smitten with the gorgeous bathrooms and that room in the roof peak. The homeowners of Bilateral House purchased a lot with a 116-year-old Period Revival home in a mature picturesque neighbourhood in Toronto. As avid collectors of contemporary art and vintage furniture, they wanted to build a modern gallery-inspired home with high ceilings to artfully display their collections. Responding to the homeowners’ vision and the City’s requirement to keep the front half of the original house, Audax sensitively restored and rebuilt the heritage façade, and designed a modern addition in the rear. However, the design solution ensured that both sides of the house could still relate to each other. To begin, Audax faithfully reconstructed the main façade with restored brick, new stucco and wood trim. Audax also rebuilt the roof to mirror the original design. Audax’s interior design strategy followed suit with a design that both honoured the original character of the house and satisfied the homeowners’ affinity for a modern gallery aesthetic.
