I absolutely adore this Brooklyn apartment, designed by Sarah Lawlor Zames of General Assembly. After trying and failing to find an apartment with character, the owners of this space opted to combine two fairly lifeless new development apartments and renovate to perfectly suit their style. Bringing in as many natural materials as possible was important to these penthouse owners, so GA incorporated concrete wall and ceiling details, reclaimed wood floors, marble slabs in the shower and kitchen, and plenty of custom Walnut millwork. We designed steel and glass doors to divide public and private areas, and full height flush millwork doors to stretch the space upward. This is a fantastic example of how to create a modern space that is comfortable and has personality. The wood flooring is an absolute dream, and is beautiful when combined with the marble and walnut. The southwestern vibe in the living room really works and the unexpected graphic wallpapers add some whimsy. I would not change a thing. Lucky owners! (photos by Joe Fletcher)

Perhaps I am distracted by the adorable puppy, but this wallpaper would typically have me horrified…and somehow I kind of love it.

I had to share another space created by The New Design Project because I adore neutral spaces that have some spunk and are not the least bit dull. This New York rental apartment is anything but dull. It has tons of personality through quirky art and furnishings despite having a very limited colour palette. This is fantastic! (More details here, photos by Alan Gastelum)

This is one of the most inspiring posts I have shared in a while, IMHO. A huge thanks to Silje for tipping us of to this in an email recently: This is the Tumblr of a friend of a friend. They’re a newly married couple in their 20s, and got an apt. in the old part of Oslo, Norway, this summer. They’re both incredibly talented and hard-working, and they have just renovated their tiny apartment ALL by themselves. Their style is typically Norwegian, using “honest” materials (as well cal it), thrifted stuff, secondhand furniture and a mixing it to a delightfully minimalist style. Well worth a wee looksy, especially the before and after pictures of the livingroom/kitchen! The blog is named “down in Løkka“, Løkka being a nickname for Grünerløkka, a hipster/old part of Oslo. I am completely in awe of all of the work they have done on their tiny pad. And it is beautiful, and perfectly minimal. I am so impressed.

I can’t get enough of The New Design Project‘s work. I spotted this beauty (located in Le Marais, Paris) on their site and had to share it as well. The perfect little Parisian hangout. The challenge in this 30m2 (320ft2) studio was to retain the quirkiness of the space whilst making it more practical. We decided to create an alcove bedroom with a half height wall to improve the general flow whilst keeping the apartment bright and airy. A simple and monochromatic palette was used in the “utilitarian areas” (kitchen, bathroom) to let the ambient charm shine through. Most of the items are flea market finds (Paris, London, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue) but we mixed vintage with industrial pieces, and high street with designer, to create an overall more eclectic look.
