Pretty in pink

Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2020 by midcenturyjo

Thoughts on millennial pink? Over the trend? Seen enough? I felt that way until I saw this cute as a button apartment by Washington D.C. based Zoë Feldman Design. So cheerful, so warm, so inviting. May I say so rosy? It puts a smile on my face.

I came across this Stockholm apartment on sköna hem and did a double take for a couple of reasons. First, it was suspect that this was a Swedish home. Those lovely Swedes aren’t exactly known for their colourful homes. Second, it was so unique and over the top that I needed to review a second and third time to make sure I didn’t miss anything. A layered space is always a win in my book. I want to discover something new at each glance. If I can evaluate a room in its entirety in 3 seconds, I am bored. Kudos to designer Pontus Nilvander for holding my attention for well beyond 3 seconds. (Photos: Johan Carlsson)

A renovated 1936 home with vintage charm

Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2020 by KiM

Respect to all those designers out there who appreciate original architectural details and attempt to maintain the history of a home. Such as San Francisco firm Landed Interiors & HomesThe renovation of this classic 1936 home included a reimagining of a cluster of small rooms that were no longer functional. We opened up the kitchen to the dining room and backyard, utilizing a view from the front of the house extending to the back yard and reconfigured the connection to the ground level, addressing the floor plan of bedrooms and bathrooms on both levels. The transformation has an incredible feeling of openness that wasn’t there before. We were careful of the original architectural details, installing new windows and doors that matched the old style, repeating arches in the openings, and keeping original trim where possible. The original vaulted living room was enhanced with updated furnishings from different eras to reflect the client’s eclectic taste, from contemporary to mid-century to antique pieces. Our choices for both furniture and interior finishes were motivated by the vintage Storybook architecture, which is British-influenced and calls for classic materials that are of solid quality.

Bold drama with Harbour views

Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2020 by midcenturyjo

“With iconic Sydney Harbour as it’s backdrop and flooded with natural light the brief for Wolseley was to inject high Parisian style and design into a suburban setting. This involved the complete transformation and refurbishment of an existing three story semi-detached townhouse through considered custom detailing and materiality. The home retains a strong connection to the external environment and is accentuated by bold strokes of drama and ethereal forms.”
