Rising from the grass, shaded by a stand of trees is a simple beach house celebrating its surroundings and the lifestyle of surf and sand, sun and fun with family and friends. This is simple building within a short walk of the sea but in its simplicity, its pared back state is the essence of casual days, a slower time and pace. Life is a beach after all and the design team at Martín Gómez Arquitectos are no beach bums when it comes to the perfect seaside retreat. Over the next few days I will be sharing more from Martín Gómez. In the seaside town of Punta del Este, Uruguay he has been slowly designing and building a relationship with this beautiful part of the world. A relationship that embraces site and nature, the built environment and natural environment. Each home will be different but always with a common thread. Perched on a ridge overlooking the sea at Seal Rocks north of Newcastle in NSW is an idyllic beach side retreat. A series of pavilions rises up the slope providing space to live, relax and escape from the everyday world. Simple finishes and fittings are stylish and forgiving but the greatest luxury of this house is the view. What a view. Miles and miles of ocean and coastline vistas to sooth the soul and recharge the mind. I could live forever sitting quietly on the deck watching the waves roll in, whales swim past on their annual migration and fisherman cast their lines. Seal Rocks House by Bourne Blue Architecture.

Climbing up the hill behind a simple weatherboard beach house is an extension that opens to the breezes and captures the view. A traditional rabbit warren of a holiday home is lifted  to new heights with open plan living on the higher levels and a much needed level play space because after all this is a family home. Toys and tricycles, wet swimmers and sandy footprints trekked in. Not at all precious but a real jewel none the less. This Pretty Beach, NSW home is by David Boyle Architect.

Burrowed into a sandy ridge on the Mornington Peninsula is a house by studiofour. Dark boxes spill down the slope while double height windows invite the outside in. Decks reach out to the native landscape which shelters the house from harsh winds. Public and private, positive and negative space, dark and light. Manmade and the natural. A holistic approach by the design studio ensures a bespoke home that addresses the site and the owner’s needs. A piece of art, a sculpture as house, a metamorphosis.

On and on forever. Blue sea melts into blue sky. The perfect backdrop for this small but casually elegant seaside cottage at Palm Beach north of Sydney I recently found real estate stalking. As lovely as the home is, it is the deck and that view that just might clinch the deal for any prospective buyer. If they need a little more convincing then the stone wine cellar and bathroom are definitely a talking point. By no means large it is big on style and long on lingering drinking in that view.
