Just a few minutes from downtown Nîmes, the chateau can be seen through the century-old trees of its nearly two-hectare (4.9 acres) park. Although its origins date back to the 18th century, the building was something of a well-kept secret until the current owners undertook a major, state-of-the-art restoration. The imposing door opens onto a sumptuous entrance hall (829 sq ft, over 32 feet high ceilings). You’ll be moved by the 12th-century chapel (646 sq ft, 33 feet high), nestled in the heart of the chateau, which can be seen halfway up, framed by the two staircases. The living areas are cleverly positioned on the first floor. On one side, two adjoining rooms with large volumes and keystone ceilings, highlighted by central moldings and arches. The first, with its terracotta floor and period fireplace, is currently used as a living room. The second, with its terrazzo floor, is a media room. We cross the sumptuous entrance hall to reach the opposite wing of the chateau and its kitchen-dining room. A scullery and laundry room follow. A climb up the central double staircase leads to the chateau’s second floor. On one side, the bridal suite features soaring ceilings and a period fireplace. The opposite wing has four bedrooms – two of which are on mezzanine – and two bathrooms. Two more sections await us. In the entrance hall, a door to the left of the grand staircase gives access to a completely independent bedroom and bathroom. A few steps also give access to the chateau’s cellars. A spiral staircase leads to the top floor, the only unrenovated part of the building.
WHOA. This château has to be up there as one of my favourites. Not that fancy with the exception of that spectacular chapel. How cool would that space be converted into a library!! For sale via Poncet & Poncet for €1,595,000.

Nineteenth Century chateau on the northern bank of the river Charente, just a five-minute walk from the centre of glorious Jarnac. This extraordinary prestige property was built for a wealthy cognac merchant towards the end of the 19th century, sits high overlooking a town steeped in the culture and traditions of the cognac trade. Arranged over 3 stories, in excess of 700m2, and with a vast basement area to develop. On the ground floor there is a dining room, with grand wooden fireplace, wall-panelling, coffered ceiling and painted wall hangings, a study with another spectacularly carved and painted ceiling and a vast reception room area opening on to the terrace and below, the gravel driveway which encircles the building. Of particular note is the “winter salon”, with its mosaic flooring, stucco balustrading, hand-painted wall fabrics and ornate cornicing. A long hallway with painted wall coverings runs west to east, with a kitchen and stone, spiral, service staircase connecting basement to upper levels at one end, and a magnificent marble split-level, complete with yet more floor to ceiling hand painted artwork at the other. On the first floor there are four large bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and open on to the grand balcony at the front of the chateau. The top floor has a further 6 bedrooms. The park land of over 5 acres which slopes down from the house to the riverbank is predominantly meadow and directly in front of and beneath the driveway there is a stone “grotto” with a series of pools and waterfalls.
This sounds like absolute perfection, and almost looks like it (clearly some work required). Love this soooo much! For sale for €1,750,000 via Prestige Property.

Wilcove Lane

This handsome Grade II*-listed home sits in the middle of the picturesque National Trust-managed Antony Estate, amid the rural countryside of the Devon/Cornwall border. The house was originally built as a school in 1847. It was rebuilt as a vicarage before being remodelled by architect William White, who, in 1849, divided it into a Gothic-style residence. It unfolds over 6,000 sq ft, with six bedrooms, a series of striking living areas and additional outbuildings. The estate’s striking church sits at the foot of the house’s pretty gardens, which encompass terraced areas well-positioned for the sun and an outdoor heated pool. In recent years, the house has been thoughtfully renovated and restored. A plethora of original features have been preserved, including the staircase with its quatrefoil carvings, substantial fireplaces with pointed arch detailing, and a screen in the study set on marble columns.
This home’s details (both exterior and interior) are exquisite! Most of the interior is unfortunate and not doing the home any favours but I can easily imagine the fun I would have redecorating this. And of course, would keep it mostly traditional with some of my quirky MCM and modern touches. For sale via Inigo.

A 15th century bastide & farm in France

Posted on Sun, 6 Oct 2024 by KiM

In an environment of absolute tranquility, this 15th-century estate sits majestically atop a hill, in the heart of its expansive private park of over 51 hectares (126 acres). A vast plain stretches out, a winding stream meanders through hills, a variety of fruit trees, a dense forest, majestic pines, graceful cypresses and over 700 olive trees. The land has been farmed organically by the owners for over half a century, demonstrating their commitment to preserving the environment. The bastide, with a total surface area of around 1000m2, comprises 4 separate buildings arranged around a spacious central courtyard. Renovations carried out in the 1980s created two separate dwellings, one covering 250m2 (2691 sq ft) and the other 120m (1292 sq ft).
This home exudes so much charm, despite the mostly terrible interior that really lacks effort. The potential here is incredible. For sale for €1,550,000 via Poncet & Poncet.

Castello Di Dello

Proposed in an exclusive historical medieval context, Castle in the municipality of Dello, in the province of Brescia. The characteristic property, immersed in a park of approx. 1900 sqm, is located in the centre of the town. Passing through the gate of the property, we enter directly into the paved courtyard and encounter three distinct buildings: the guardhouse, the castle and at the end of the courtyard the stables. The castle is spread over three floors with a total area of about 1350 square metres. On the ground floor we find the restaurant area as well as other rooms that can also be used for twenty business or other purposes. There is then a large entrance hall with a grand staircase leading to the upper floors. On the first floor, above the restaurant area, there is a service group with storage room, a lounge and two bedrooms. While above the flat, via the grand staircase, there is a second flat consisting of two halls/living rooms, a kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. On the attic floor, above the dining area, there are two rooms; while above the residential area there are three large rooms with excellent heights where one can comfortably create living quarters. The entire property also includes the guardhouse and stables.
This castle is one of my favourites I’ve featured in some time. Possibly because it is furnished and photographed reasonably well (both of which, to my horror, seem to be hard to come by). For sale via JamesEdition for €2,250,000.
