A classic cottage reimagined

Posted on Wed, 1 Mar 2023 by midcenturyjo

“On a steeply sloping site, an extensive build is perched beyond a classic cottage façade, where contemporary curves are underpinned by mid-century lines … Drawing inspiration from mid-century architecture and driven by the client’s passion for unique, highly detailed design resulted in a robust base of materiality, from concrete to brickwork, layered with warm, bespoke timber elements and unexpectedly colour saturated spaces.”

Charlotte’s Folly

A Brothers Grimm hideaway that seems to sprout from the garden like a limewashed berry, Charlotte’s Folly is a luxury self-catering cottage nestled in 200 acres of Shropshire woodlands. Telling a sweet tale of craftmanship and nostalgia, this terracotta trinket is storybook architecture at its finest, a time-travelling family retreat that could have been lifted from folklore.
Designed by Emma Ainscough, this magical little 19th-century cottage is available for rent via Unique Homestays. I am completely smitten with the beauty of the estate (which includes ‘architectural marvels of Victorian stature’) and that gorgeous kitchen. Mediterranean luxury

“The three-storey Mariposa apartment is set in an iconic, brutalist listed building. The architectural challenge of this major renovation project was to combine five different apartments into one 500 sqm harmonious space … A reduced palette of five materials (Périgord stone, oak, bronze, travertine, and walnut) is used throughout to define the spaces and create a feeling of continuity. Inspired by the brutalist architecture of the exteriors, the apartment seems to have been carved in stone and creates a living space reminiscent of an alcove, which is both authentic and sophisticated.”

Stunning apartment in a stunning part of the world Cannes with an emphasis on the luxury of Mediterranean living. Apartment Mariposa by Caprini & Pellerin.

Daunt’s Albatross

It’s almost the weekend and I’m dreaming and scheming of a getaway. The recently refurbished Daunt’s Albatross in Montauk on the east end of the Long Island peninsula looks like just the spot for a group of us. Now in my daydream, it’s summer and we explore the beaches and hike the trails or if it’s cold like now then we snuggle by the fire and indulge in the restaurants. Either way, the stylish yet relaxed new look for this family-run hotel is by Brooklyn-based interior designers Home Studios.

Stone House

I love the rustic, cottage/farmhouse look and feel of this home in the Hudson Valley. It is an amalgamation of an 18th century farmhouse, a wood Civil War–era residence and a 3 story addition. Together it almost looks like a little village and they blend together really beautifully in this very picturesque, 56 acre property. And that kitchen is massive and an absolute dream!
