Function and efficiency match style and aesthetics in this minimalist Chicago pied-à-terre. Intricate plaster moldings and architectural touches original to this beaux-arts apartment serve as the perfect backdrop for a highly curated and intentionally sparse collection of furnishings and objets d’art – which gives this home it’s chic sensibility. The home, filled only with those collected items most precious to its resident, is a wash in neutrals and natural light – allowing abstract works and sculptural forms to shine and hold court. Small in footprint, this urban apartment packs a punch larger than spaces multiple times its size.
I spotted this apartment over a year ago and never posted it because I thought it was maybe too minimalist for our audience. But I have not stopped thinking about it so I am finally caving. It’s because of this that I now have an obsession for pewter and recently purchased vintage pewter wall candle sconces (and am holding back my desire to amass a collection of imperfect pewter plates). Bringing in patterns with textiles and wallpaper is always going to win over my heart. Like this home designed by Caitlin Flemming. I’d swap out all the white for something a little warmer but otherwise this home in Petaluma, California is a home run. Cozy and vintage-vibes that are classic and will endure the test of time.

Located in Melbourne’s leafy inner suburbs, Heyington Residence is a renovation by 11:11 of a 1930s interwar home, originally inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement. The studio preserved and honoured these ideas, focusing on quality materials and craftsmanship. Despite losing many original details during a 1990s renovation they reinstated the home’s charm with modern functionalities. Intricate timber panelling in the study guided new joinery complemented by natural stone and polished plaster. The result is a contemporary family home blending modern comfort with historical character.

“A thoughtful project that we took down to the studs to transform an old cottage to a beautiful new modernized home with many intentional designs to reflect the old home.”

This home and the lifestyle it embodies are all about embracing the natural essence of this sybaritic island through an authentic celebration of indoor-outdoor living. Through a series of interconnected pavilions, a collected, art-forward home came together, revealing a deeply rich and intense color palette full of playfulness, elegance, and luxury. A mixture of ebonized gray French Oak and limestone flooring, paired with warm plaster walls adds to the relaxing and inviting interior.
What a heavenly place this would be to escape to in the winter months (or any months for that matter). A slice of Caribbean heaven. By Alexander Design.
