“A meticulous renovation of a landmarked two-bedroom, two-bathroom Upper West Side townhouse, we were tasked with creating a feminine, cultivated, and imaginative oasis for a young, eclectic and creative client. We drew inspiration from a Parisian pied-à-terre, along with Ottoman architecture and Spanish design.”

Perched on Manly’s Shelly Beach headlands, Shell House by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects blends with its stunning surroundings, celebrating contrast through curved and linear elements. The design reflects the bay’s shape with features like an organic pool and curved furnishings while interiors remain understated to enhance the breathtaking views. Sandstone walls and glass seamlessly integrate the home with the landscape, offering an immersive experience. Minimal outdoor footprint and expansive glazing emphasize proximity to the bay, creating a tranquil, immersive retreat that harmonizes with the unique coastal setting.

The home’s crisp architectural edges create a frame that draws the eye inward, showcasing the light-filled interior and lush courtyard. Nestled in a serene suburban area, the design fosters introspection rather than outward views. The generous layout promotes a sense of spaciousness and interconnectedness, with internal vistas linking separate rooms. A single-storey rear pavilion features a skylit roof, flooding the open-plan living spaces with northern light. The sculptural kitchen island serves as a focal point, echoing the home’s design motifs. Materials like brick and concrete provide a raw, tactile quality, while timber accents soften the look. Custom terrazzo flooring with subtle pink flecks adds warmth and the timber-clad study offers a cozy retreat. Overall, the residence captures a modern essence, creating a joyful environment for family life within its leafy surroundings.
