I am stricken, yes stricken, with love for this 18th century half-timber house hidden in the dunes and marshes of the Vistula River down on the Baltic Sea coast of Poland. 3 apartments contained within an historic building. Old and new, history and the stylishly comfortable here and now. I just can’t come up with the right words to describe this house. Nothing seems worthy enough. I speechless (or should I say rambling). I wouldn’t want to leave this holiday lodge.  Salvinia Lodge. That’s the name of my new home. I’ll be renting it forever and I’ll expect you to join me soon. Tomorrow I’ll introduce you to the architects.

Every so often an email lands in my inbox from perhaps the cruelest man I know. Chris from Welcome Beyond dangles dream designs in front of me and it is all I can do to stop myself from hocking everything I own, jumping a plane and escaping to the hand picked boutique vacation properties that litter the pages of their website. Chris has cruelly tempted me again with a Spanish beauty and oh the temptation! Alemanys 5…  “located in the core part of Girona’s medieval quarter, within the scope of the first wall and overlooking the Plaça de Sant Domènec, is the property Alemanys 5, whose original building dates from the Sixteenth Century. Its recent restoration integrates old and new, where sober and clean lines look for the enjoyment of essential elements such as space, light, shadow, fire, stone, water or silence.” Two apartments, “El Badiu” (The Veranda) and “El Jardí” (The Garden) designed by architect Anna Noguera. Have you noticed how things never stay the same? Like personal taste? I have seen my likes and dislikes change and coalesce, firm and falter over these past few years. I have always admired the work of New York based interiors and landscape firm Rees Roberts + Partners. I think I had a crush on their work way way back (so did Kim even further back). Then I was drawn to their cool, sophisticated urban interiors. All elegance and class. I was revisiting their site the other day and was drawn immediately to this Croatian house. A new work? Must be. I hadn’t noticed it a couple of years ago otherwise I would have remembered. It is so fabulously rugged yet stylish with just the right touches of casual elegance and midcentury classic pieces. But maybe it’s not new. Maybe it was there all along. Maybe I’m just looking at it with new eyes, a new awareness. All I know is I love it!

Ah Umbria! Beautiful, beautiful Umbria! If I had won the lottery last week I would be winging my way to Italy right now. Escaping the incessant torrential rain swamping Queensland. I know it is not summer over in Italy right now but I’m prepared to rough it through the winter at Castello di Reschio. That way all will be ready for your visit when the weather warms up. 5 bedrooms, might have to wheel in a few trundle beds. If I rent it from now to eternity you all might be able to make it for a week or two. Line starts on the left 😉
