…. from my collection of “evil” vintage Santas.

WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week?

  • Vintage Industrial Hardwood Slab Industrial Workshop desk. Steel factory base with time worn patina. Sigh! At Factory20. I’m currently lost in the lighting section if someone wants to come find me. Is there such a thing as lamp lust?

  • This is about the only Hedge Fund I’ll be investing in at the moment. Watch your money grow in these tough economic times.

  • And to go with our tea towel chairs? These simply stunning chandeliers by Marie Christophe. Please Evil Santa please!

  •  The Ignatius Bed by Stone Blitzer. Made from reclaimed douglas fir (gym bleachers from St Ignatius College, Chicago) and soon from other timbers. Rugged and clean lined.

What Jo looks like at last!

WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week? A very mixed group is the answer!

  • Loving these pieces at Beclau, a family owned and operated business, a high-end custom timber furniture manufacturer. Homewares too.

  • Bus roll and leather journals from davidmetnicole. Sigh. These are perfect. Vintage 1950 British destination blinds. Please Santa, please.

  • For the bookworm. The Lampada Poltrona by Luigi Caccia Dominioni, perfect for your chair or bedhead. Leather and chrome plated brass. At Suite NY. Love this, so want this.

  • Charlotte Waters from Brooklyn, NY emailed to introduce Handcrafted Coops, what every stylish chicken needs in their christmas stocking (my words not her’s). Portable chicken coops for backyard and urban farmers. Architecture for the birds! “Our coop is based on the ‘chicken ark’ that has been used by British hen keepers for decades. Our coops are made with plantation-grown, sustainable materials. They provide a healthy, predator-proof home for 4 hens or 6 bantams.” Put some wheels on them and we call them chicken tractors here in Australia. When I finally get my house I’m getting a couple of chickens. Maybe they’d like a swanky home like this!

The Great Gift Challenge – part 3

Posted on Wed, 2 Dec 2009 by KiM

It’s time for another edition of the great gift challenge (a special campaign with partners Martha Stewart and eBay), where Jo and I scour eBay looking for the perfect Christmas gifts for our loved ones. This week the budget for the gift was $150 (excluding shipping). I purchased something last week for my twin sister Julia, so this week I thought I’d look for something for my younger sister Jen. She’s in her late twenties and it was her wedding that I attended in Vegas last weekend. Her and her new husband Dave bought a house a couple of years ago and ended up running out to a couple of boring furniture stores and bought just about everything they needed to furnish their home. I was disappointed that they didn’t go out and shop vintage to try and find some unique and funky pieces. So I thought this was the perfect opportunity to find them that funky something. I thought mid-century items would suit their style so I went searching eBay and found quite a few items I thought they’d love:

Lighting is often neglected in a new home and the sputnik chandelier would suit so many rooms in my sister’s home, and it’s such so versatile. Speaking of versatility, the trolley is a great piece that could be used in a bathroom to hold towels and toiletries, in a dining or living room as a bar, in the office to hold notebooks and other office supplies. The Eames era wall shelves would be perfect in her office or in their media room in the basement to hold books and knickknacks. And lastly, the teak stackable tables, useful when she has guests over and needs little tables for drinks and snacks. I was totally stuck on which one to bid on, until I came across this:

It’s a replica Kartell Componibili storage table that the seller picked up at auction and was told it was purchased in the 70s. I have always loved the Componibili but have never come across one here so when I found this one being sold by an eBay seller who is located here in Ottawa (they have an incredible mid-century shop near my home that I always have to stop at) I had to jump on it. It was listed as a Buy It Now for $199 with a “Make an Offer” option. So I went for it, and sent them an offer of $150 and it was accepted! The best part was I was able to drive the 10 minutes to their shop and pick it up, saving on shipping costs. Once I picked it up I realized this table would be SO ADORABLE in my niece’s bedroom as storage for her toys and would suit her very vintage bedroom that my sister has recently been redecorating. So now I’m torn. Perhaps I will solve this problem simply by keeping it for myself. 😉 This one will be tough to wrap due to it’s size, so I’m thinking about finding a big red velvet “Santa sack” and putting it in that with a huge white or black bow tied around the middle. Another gift done! Stay tuned next week for Jo’s $300 purchase. And don’t forget that part of this challenge involves you! If you are a resident of the U.S., head on over to this site and enter to win a $1000 eBay gift voucher. Now THAT would be a blast to spend.

…. what the real estate websites don’t show you.
Is this my new bathroom?
The rest of the old house has potential but this is definitely a challenge!

WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week?

    • Inspired by his Norwegian heritage and woodworking traditions handed down through his family furniture designer Andrew Moe has created the Oslo Collection. Every piece in the collection is crafted from reclaimed timber beams. It’s a Scandinavian aesthetic meets Japanese economy of design. The pale blond hue and smooth wax finish just makes me want to stroke these pieces and watch them age with time. More info at Studio Moe.
    • I couldn’t resist. I just had to feature the fabulous eco craftiness of Australian designer Morgan Wills. Morgan’s Cast offs range is made from 100% recycled finely woven woollen jumpers and her Play with me range utilises everything from vintage fabrics, designer off cuts, linen & cotton tea towels and tablecloths from yesteryear. Too too cute and vibrantly colourful. I seriously need some of those felt beads for my winter wardrobe.
    • Glam and just a little different? London based Ivory Pearl Interiors website will satisfy your craving for all things silver embossed, french, rococo or mirrored. The papillon silver wardrobe would be gorgeous in a boudoir.
    • I’m in love! I need this green Chinese chair in my life…. now! Oh my, oh my! Celebrate Pagoda Red’s new website and become eligible to win this 19th century Chinese roundback chair. Go to Pagoda Red and subscribe before May 30th for a chance to win. Actually you’ll be there for quite awhile. So many lovely lovely pieces.
    • Stephanie emailed, “We wanted to send you a quick email to let you know about Cardboard Safari’s newest full-body figure product, Rambling Robbie (just launched last week). Robbie is sure to add a little wildlife to any home decor. Great for gifting, kid’s room decor, or just something fun to place around the home or office……..” This isn’t a winkaroo it’s a winkarhino (ooooh sorry about that). Now what could I do with a full bodied rhino?
  • And let’s finish with two blogs. Angie Henry is a stay-at-home-mom/artist trying to make the best and most beautiful out of the everyday. “I love to make the mundane fun. I hope that I can inspire someone out there to be creative and love their home and their life!” Her blog is Angie Henry Designs. Enjoy!Victoria is an interior decorator and artist in Westchester, NY. Her blog Art House Design showcases her work, musings on art, design, life style and the places she comes across on her journeys.Lots of lovely eye candy.

…. on my inspiration board

    • Crave acrylic? Lust for lucite? Then Spectrum West will make you weak at the knees. They are launching their collection this spring at ICFF. It’s clear that my heart belongs to perspex. What about yours?
    • The drama, the passion or should that be patina. Luxe looking and definitely statement pieces check out Boca Do Lobo. And then there are the limited edition pieces!
    • Now for the too too cute! Check out Lapin & Me. It’s a wonderland of the hand-made, the nostalgic and the unusual.
    • Loxii is a vinyl wall graphics company based out of Las Vegas. While Chris Levy and Stewart Christensen have designed most of the graphics they have also partnered with three other designers. Samantha Hahn from New York, Gisela Here from Buenos Aires, and Nicole Ketchum from West Hartford, Connecticut. The online site is new and they are trying to develop a community based design company with design competitions and lots of custom work. My love affair with decals is still going strong (I rent, I love) especially with great new designs coming on the market. Good luck guys!
    • Case Jernigan is an up and coming artist who emailed to introduce his work. I love it particularly his portraits. Take a look for yourself.
    • Spring is sprung and Matthew Mead is up to his fabulous styling, culinary and entertainment tricks again. Easter is just next week so he’s just in time.
  • Yuki Murata emailed, “… my business started when friends commissioned me to make their wedding china (the coral pattern) back in 2004… not much these days for affordable hand painted china – Meissen and Royal Copenhagen are out of most people’s price range – I really try to keep my pricing realistic, everyone deserves something original and hand made. Anyway, I just launched my online store moderngoods.” Love your work Yuki. Especially love your fish sculptures. Now where could I fit these in my house?

Quite a diverse lot this week. Don’t forget the mega easter chock-a-block gorge yourself silly reading guides next weekend. Can never get too much of a good thing (and easter eggs)!
