Another new chair

Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 by KiM

I recently had the privilege of trying out another beanbag chair from Sumolounge. I was able to select any model that peaked my curiosity, so I chose a Sumosac Couple. Quite a bit less floppy than their Omni model that I first received, the Couple is part of Sumo’s series of more rounded, firmer models. It is filled with 100% shredded furniture grade urethane foam, and wrapped in a removable micro-suede cover. I opted for this model because the models larger than this seemed pretty big and I wanted to make sure it would easily fit through a doorway and into my boyfriend’s apartment. It is, if possible, more comfortable than the Omni, and I love that the cover can be removed and washed. I plunked myself down in it the other night to watch some TV and it was awesome. My boyfriend’s cats adore the new chair too (as you’ll see in the photos). A big thanks to Sumo for sending me another chair! (Unfortunately, you’ll have to suffer through some more photos of me on the chair, as I couldn’t very well show a photo of only a black blob).

Ranch Houses

Posted on Wed, 25 Mar 2009 by KiM

I absolutely adore books. When I received an email a little while ago about a book called Ranch Houses, I was instantly intrigued. I love the style of ranch homes and there are so few of them up here in Ottawa. The architecture of these houses is a popular one, and it’s obvious why, with such huge expanses of windows to join indoor with outdoor spaces. I recently got my hands on a copy of this book, by David Weingarten and Lucia Howard, published by Rizzoli NY, and it my new favourite coffee table book. I only buy books that look great, and this one has the most gorgeous photo on the jacket (and might I add, the cover is a fabulous shade of orange, because that’s important too).

I’ve got to give props to the photographer, Joe Fletcher. The photos are dreamy, and showcase these ranch homes so beautifully. The book features a home that was initially built in 1797, others in the 1800’s and 1900’s and up to 2005. A brief history is provided with each home, as well as photos of the interior, exterior and landscape. I cannot wait until the weekend when I can devour each photo and every word.

Enough teasing – how about a little taste?

… at my sister’s commitment ceremony today. Got her a couple of goats! More below.

WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week?

    • I’m still totally hooked on anything Florence Broadhurst and would kill for one of these beautiful rugs from Australian handwoven rug specialists Cadrys. Bob & Mark Cadry will soon be bound for the USA to reveal their gorgeous Florence Broadhurst Collection, launching in both Los Angeles and New York. Four decades ago Florence and Cadry patriarch Jacques would chat about their love of textiles and rugs and now the family company “re-unites” them again. See more here.
    • Wow! Love glass mosaics, love these fun examples from Trend. It’s their new Wallpaper Collection. And the colours!! Daffodil yellows, peony pinks, cornflower blues and meadow greens.
    • Camilla Aspeli emailed, “My chair Drops showed at Stockholm furniture fair, made out of leftover textiles, inner tube and steel legs. Dusk poufs made of leftover textiles. Treat bowls. Recycled lampshade frames with colorful threads makes perfect bowls! Wild Camilla!
    • Frou-Frou & Claude – luxury screen makers based in London. Not only beautiful upholstered screens but lovely staging on the website too.
  • Today my little sister is getting married. Well commitment ceremony is what we have here. It’s a wonderful family day. But what do you buy two middle aged (OMG I’m older than her!) women who have too much of everything and have warned you that they want no presents? You give the present to someone who really needs it. I bought a couple of goats here and I’m sure you can find something similar in your home country. Congrats girls! We love you!

Sumo

There are chairs, and then there are CHAIRS. There is one chair I have wanted for quite some time, and when I got home from work Friday, there it was in a huge box on my front porch. My first ever bean bag chair! I was as giddy as a schoolgirl let me tell ya. Andrew, the founder of Sumo, had emailed a few days ago and wondered if I would be interested in receiving their Omni chair. And I am SO GLAD he did! It is the coolest thing ever. I chose platinum, which turned out to be the perfect choice. I had the thing in about a zillion positions and each one was super comfy. It’s so big, you can sit and have part of it as a back rest. LOVED that. I chilled out in front of the TV on it in that position and I think it’s up there in terms of comfort level with my newly constructed sofa. I can’t wait to have my little niece over so she can play around on it. Speaking of which, they’re made of rip-proof nylon so my 6 cats nor the niece can do damage. It comes in 10 colours (was kind of hard to choose), several different styles (a gamer, a stool, some that fit multiple people) and FREE SHIPPING!!! Also to note, they are cheaper than other brands. So go on over to their site and seriously, order one for yourselves. They are awesome. Thank you Andrew!!!

I’m working in the garden this weekend. What about you?

WINKS – weekend links. Here we list what has come in during the week, things we’ve found and things we think you’ll want to see. If you’d like to see your blog or website featured email us and if we think it fits with our readers we’ll link you. So what’s in this week?

    • Jeni from Rian Rae emailed to let us know that there are lots of lovely new things in her store. How does she find such beautiful pieces?
    • Architectural and furniture designer David Sears has released his new range of furniture. The concept for Sears’ “Cube Furniture Collection” sprang from his desire to pare down design to its base elements of function and form. Economy of design not only gives his collection a modern feel, but works inherently with the concept of sustainability and eco-living. Available at EcoModern Design.
    • The latest from Radius Design is the Tree of Charge. While your cell phone, digital camera and mp3 player charge their batteries under the tree, the mains adapters are hidden inside. The decorative tree made of powder-coated steel is not just low-maintenance greenery, but also functions as a key rack and magnet board. And with the photos of your loved ones, it becomes a family tree. Perfect for your your landing strip! Thanks Andreas.
    • Home decor, nerdiness and function coalesce in these latest offerings from BowerBird & Olive. The sacred heart oil lamp is either wall or table mounted with heart shaped lab ware and blood red oil while the boiling flask diffuser lets your inner aromatherapy
      chemist play.
  • Gosia from one of my favourite Etsy stores blue bell bazaar emailed with exciting news. “I would like let you know about my new adventure. From March 1st I’m renting a space at Heritage Trail Antique Mall in Wilmette in Illinois, where I will be selling my vintage finds and my hand made glassware. Of course my weekly updates for people far away will be still running…. I hope that you or your readers will come to see me one day.” Don’t think Kim or I will be making the long trip very soon from Canada or Australia but doesn’t mean we can’t dream of the treasure we’d find.
