I came across this Stockholm apartment on sköna hem and did a double take for a couple of reasons. First, it was suspect that this was a Swedish home. Those lovely Swedes aren’t exactly known for their colourful homes. Second, it was so unique and over the top that I needed to review a second and third time to make sure I didn’t miss anything. A layered space is always a win in my book. I want to discover something new at each glance. If I can evaluate a room in its entirety in 3 seconds, I am bored. Kudos to designer Pontus Nilvander for holding my attention for well beyond 3 seconds. (Photos: Johan Carlsson)

Sometimes all it takes is some modern artwork, some bold accent furniture and accessories, statement lighting, maybe a bit of graphic wallpaper and tile…. Coates Place was a 4 bed student flat that had seen better days, and after a complete home renovation, including new central heating system, a few new doorways and a kitchen relocation, the apartment is now a contemporary city pad fit for today’s living. Designed by Mr Buckley Interiors.

This art-filled Georgian Revival home in Charlotte, North Carolina was designed to be family friendly and is so warm, comfortable and casual. Style was not compromised here, and I am particularly smitten with the simple, Parisian café vibe of the kitchen. The home has a subtle beachy, Caribbean vibe. By interior designer Barrie Benson.

If you’re stuck going in to the office on a Sunday, it would be no sweat if it was as cool as the Oakland, CA office of Black Girls CODE (an inspiring organization trying to increase the number of women of color in the digital technology space by introducing girls 7-17 to CS – which I LOVE. 20 years ago when I was in the computer science program at a local college, I was one of maybe 5 women, and that included my twin sister. And we 5 were white or Asian). Designer Kīyonda Powell used such stunning, jewel tones in this space, and lots of fun patterns in fabrics and wallpaper.

The family friendly, dynamic and spirited vibe of this home is not quite what you’d expect when the exterior is a conventional Colonial home. I LOVE the unexpected!!!  When the homeowners moved into this 1920’s center hall colonial in Essex Fells, New Jersey, they envisioned a comfortable, livable home where family and friends can kick off their shoes and unwind. The brief: Repurposed rooms, reinvented family heirlooms and a riot of color and pattern equal an unfussy environment that embraces the craziness of life with three young children. Perfectly Imperfect.
