Branching out

Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2010 by KiM

A reader named Sarah emailed us recently asking that we branch out and post some non-US and non-Swedish content. I said no problem – but considering neither Jo nor I are American or Swedish, we don’t go out specifically looking for content from those countries. That just seems to be what we happen upon on our random Google searches when looking for blog content. So when I asked Sarah if she knew of any sites we could refer to for the blog she suggested a site from Israel, bvd.co.il. I found tons of blog-worthy content (although I unfortuntely don’t know Hebrew) so thank you Sarah! One home that was featured on the site really caught my eye. Turns out it has a bit of a Swedish/Scandinavian country vibe to it. LOL. It’s SOOO pretty and is perfect decor for the cottage I wished I owned. White walls, gorgeous hardwood floors, big white squishy couches, small touches of pale colours…what’s not to love? (Forget the interior…I was sold on the palm tree out front. We don’t get those up here).

Nathalie Vingot Mei

Nathalie Vingot Mei is an interior designer from la belle Provence who wrote us recently to say she’s a fan of the blog….and now I’m a fan of her work. Her work has been featured in Art et décoration, Marie Claire Maison and Côté sud. One word – SERENITY. Inviting spaces bathed in white and creams, with pale accent colours and lots of textures in fabrics, all with a very raw quality. C’est merveilleux et je suis vraiment contente qu’elle nous a envoyé un courriel. 🙂

All there in black and white

A limited palette but maximum appeal. Stark modern interiors by Paris architectural firm Joseph Dirand. Oh the luxury of pure minimalism. Imagine having a sleek and often hidden home for the “things” of everyday life. Clean lines may be cold to some but heaven to others. And just a hint of aged timber to warm the heart!

A heavenly bathroom

Posted on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 by KiM

I received an email this morning that totally made my day. Here’s what Dylan wrote: “I just wanted to write as a local Ottawan and say that I am a big fan of your blog and follow it daily. If you’re interested, I’ve attached a couple of pics of my bathroom that we completed last year. I’m a future designer (currently in school) and this is my first real project. It is in keeping with the style that your blog seems to feature (neo-baroque?). Anyhow, thanks for posting so many amazing pics! Its nice to see good design does exist in Ottawa!” This renovated bathroom is straight out of my dreams. And since I have 2 totally awful bathrooms to redo eventually, I think I’ll be looking Dylan up for some advice and sources. Be still my heart. (Dylan, you’ve got an amazing career ahead of you).

White kitchen inspiration

Posted on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 by KiM

Abby wrote me with this request: “Congratulations on your amazing kitchen redo! I am about to embark on the same project, and am hoping you can offer some inspiration photos – both to give me ideas and to show my better half what the heck I’m talking about. My kitchen is very dark – no windows – so I’m planning to do white cabinets with white countertops (though I’m also toying with doing the cabinets in the palest shade of grey, still with the white countertops), to keep things luminous. I prefer a modern style, though some Regency details are fine, and like just about everyone I’m fond of Shaker cabinets. Definitely nothing country. I’m sure you looked at a million kitchens when you were planning yours, so I’m hoping you’ll have some great thoughts for me!”

A kitchen with no windows?? And there’s no way you can put one in? Or a skylight maybe? How sad! Going with white is a great idea because the light will reflect off the surfaces and keep it nice and bright. And I’ve already told Abby that I highly recommend the quartz I chose for my kitchen because it has all sorts of little grey and mirrored specks in it that sparkle. 🙂 I have many photos of white kitchens, so I’ve selected some non-country ones for Abby and her better half. Hope this helps and good luck with your reno!
