Concrete and wood

Posted on Mon, 17 Aug 2015 by KiM

Concrete, wood, brick, floor to ceiling windows….sounds like the making of a sweet apartment I would say. This space by Brazilian architecture firm Play Arquitetura (the folks that brought you the cat apartment) just needs a few rugs to warm up the space and a few more accessories and it is pretty much on point.

Ampurdán House

Posted on Mon, 17 Aug 2015 by KiM

No matter how my taste in interior decor changes over the years, one style has never wavered – a very rustic, centuries-old home filled with vintage and modern furnishings. The Ampurdán House whose interior is designed by Serge Castella is absolutely stunning. Pairing Panton chairs (one of my all-time favourites) with a big old reclaimed wood table surrounded by ancient architecture and an oversized piece of modern art for some extra zing is just about the best thing ever. A diamond in the rough. (Previous feature of his work here)

Stalking an electrical substation

Posted on Mon, 17 Aug 2015 by midcenturyjo

I love adaptive re-use of industrial buildings and I’m loving the conversion of this small electrical substation in Paddington in Sydney. I lived in an electrical substation over 20 years ago when the owner went overseas to work for Médecins Sans Frontières. It was more like camping though as the renovation was in its early stages. Perhaps the new owner will let me camp here if they ever go overseas. A lot more stylish… and comfortable. Link here while it lasts.

Stalking Cate Blanchett’s home

Posted on Mon, 17 Aug 2015 by midcenturyjo

It’s not often you get to stalk the home of a two-time Academy Award winner but welcome to the palatial Sydney home of Cate Blanchett. The historic Hunters Hill Home has been extensively renovated since Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton, Sydney Theatre Company Artistic Director, purchased the property in 2005 with the re-design a collaboration between Alwill Design and Lesiuk Architects. Gardens are by Will Dangar. The sale is via expressions of interest and the asking price is rumored to be in the $20 million ball park. You can find the listing here while it lasts.

An apartment of curiosities

Posted on Sun, 16 Aug 2015 by KiM

This apartment in a 1930’s building belongs to a couple (and their 2 children) who are antiquarians and gallery owners in Saint-Germain, Paris. They did not expect to live here for more than a couple of years because the space is only 700 square feet but the Parisian charm has kept them there 11 years so far. Their home is outfitted with antiques and items found on the street, making it so wonderfully eclectic. Via MilK Decoration magazine, photos: Brunet Souet.
