What was an office in Madrid is now a drop dead gorgeous duplex with original details maintained such as marble fireplaces, cast iron columns, high ceilings, herringbone floors. The eclectic furnishings add a warmth and a somewhat Parisian vibe that I’m really falling for. Designed by Noel Marichalar. San Francisco based interior designer Rachel Blindauer may have called this project a neutral retreat but what I see is an almost painterly approach to breathing new life into a mid century home. Daubs of colour flash through washes of greige, catching the eye, drawing you into a space. Calm yet colourful with a relaxed sophistication.

You know I only show you the garden posts because I’m looking for inspiration myself. Good. We’ve got that clear 🙂 I’m all in a hot tizz over this garden in Palos Verdes, California. Completed in 2000 by San Francisco based landscape architectural practice SURFACEDESIGN INC. it is a masterclass in low maintenance, drought resistant planting and dramatic yet simple hard landscaping. Garden goals I do believe.

“A compact two-story hillside mid-century received an extensive and thoughtful remodel; the only original elements to survive are the burnished block central fireplace core and the steel beams and window frames.”

Intricate details such as screens and scones were replicated and architectural materials carefully chosen. Think custom tiles, Western Red Cedar for ceilings, rift-sawn White Oak and all the modern conveniences such as a screening room. Hey it’s L.A. after all! Hill House V by The Archers.
