San Francisco designer Alison Damante calls this “New York minimalism meet Berkeley funk”. Here’s the scoop on this inspiring project: Recent East Coast transplants wanted a sparse, white backdrop for their expansive art collection, as well as an authentic design response to their mid-century home, with its bay views, exposed wood beams and original 1960’s cast concrete fireplace. Vibrant colors, handcrafted fixtures and modern furniture take cues from each installation, unifying the space and meshing art with life. I really dig this house. Everything about it architecturally is awesome, and then Alison kept the basics all in bright white so you can really change things up easily by swapping out the art/cushions/accent chairs etc. (Architecture: YamaMar Photography: Bruce Damonte)

It’s an all too familiar scenario. An iconic mid century home (in this case with interiors by A. Quincy Jones and Billy Haines) had been “developed” so that what remained bore little resemblance to its former glory. Enter Jane Hallworth and her team who set about “… restoring the architecture and interior palette back to an homage of earlier iterations under the auspices of these two design masters. Together, with an exacting client, we curated a furniture collection that would befit one of the most prestigious houses in Los Angeles without trying to pastiche or erode the original design intentions.” A truly stellar renovation, Brody by   Hallworth.

This Los Angeles mid century house by John Lautner had, in the words of Bestor Architecture, “slipped off the radar” and fallen into disrepair. Their sensitive renovation addressed structural issues, replaced glass, stripped the interior down to the original red concrete floor, added new cabinetry, addressed the leaking roof and reinstated the original carport. A wonderful new life guaranteed for this 1948 gem.

I wanted to share another project by Thread Art and Design because I am smitten with Lindsay’s work. This one has a mid-century vibe and includes a deeper accent colour palette, some black for drama and not as much wallpaper. LOVE this home too.

Close your eyes. Imagine a refurbished 80s condominium. Now imagine classic mid century pieces. Add in traditional art works. Pop it all on a shiny shiny floor. Open your eyes. Voilà! Here it is. A fabulous Baltimore Loft by Annapolis, Maryland based Bohl Architects.
