Brick house

Posted on Thu, 19 Jul 2012 by midcenturyjo

Modern and sculptural. Brick plays off concrete and timber, linear patterns meet sweeping curves. It’s a funky Melbourne house by Clare Cousins Architects that takes the raw to a new level. Bright, fresh and sun filled spaces with an indie vibe. New and now. (Photography by Shannon McGrath.)

Incorporated – part 1

Posted on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 by KiM

My twin sister sent me the link to the architecture and design firm of Incorporated, based in New York, and the heart palpitations began the second I started peeking through their residential portfolio. These guys are the shit. Seriously. This apartment they call bohemian, is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time. I don’t even know where to begin. Its space after space of awe and wonder.

Let’s start with the dining room, and the birch sliding screen. It’s a work of art in itself and the perfect backdrop for the rough wood table. And then to mix things up unexpectedly, a couple granny-ish wing chairs. And if that wasn’t enough to stop your heart, an Adelman fixture rounds off the space.

The owners must REALLY love their kids, because there is a playhouse in the middle of the apartment. And it’s wrapped in the infamous Cole & Sons Woods to make it look like a tree house. *insert big smile here*

*insert even bigger smile here* This is my dream room. A retro niche to sit back and enjoy a book, swathed in Orla Kiely’s multi-stem wallpaper because having such a niche wasn’t cool enough.

CHECK THIS OUT – that room at the back at first glance looks like a kitchen…turns out it’s the CRAFT ROOM! No words…

Fantastic living room with piano painted to blend in with the wall (take note everyone who has ever emailed us wondering how to decorate around their piano).

LOVE this little office niche.

LOVE this little stove niche with pop of pattern and colour for the backsplash.

Bedrooms are for relaxing, and this one does the trick. Beautiful panels as a headboard.

Freaking GENIUS idea of a graphic tile stripe as a backdrop for light/mirror/sink. I need to copy this in a bathroom ASAP.

These children’s bedrooms are so creative and fun it almost makes me want to have kids. Or go back in time 30 years.

itswhatiminto

I blogged back in March about itswhatiminto, a group of 6 editors reporting on all sorts of happenings (interiors, fashion, food etc.) in South Africa. Sara, one of their editors, emailed to let us know about a fantastic apartment they featured recently. I love it and another one I found on their site so I thought I’d feature both. This first one is the apartment of Adam Levy. He is one cool guy and his place is incredible – the views are to die for thanks to one huge wall of windows, and his eclectic mix of furniture is the right amount of funky. (A man with a large set of Panton chairs is a man after my own heart).

This next one is a bit less modern, a bit more vintage but still funky and eclectic. It is the home of Gina and Bruce Anderson and several dogs. (Again, after my own heart, but this time with animals!) Such a warm and friendly dwelling.

Catlin Stothers

A seamless melding of old and new, a simplicity, a truth to the designs, whether contemporary or with a nod to the traditional, a sense of humour and a love of the quirky, the found object and a relaxed and stylish vibe. Practical with panache. An easy going elan. Love the first kitchen. Love. At one moment dark and moody yet light and practical, a fabulous marriage of materials, wood and concrete, tile and stainless steel. Urban meets nature with an indy edge and you can still cook up a storm in the place. Great homes by Montreal based interior designer Catlin Stothers.

Eclectic in Notting Hill

Posted on Wed, 11 Jul 2012 by KiM

I recently got my hands on another property from London estate agents Domus Nova, this one is eclectic and modern and gorgeous. It’s a 5 bedroom, 5 story home in Notting Hill that was refurbished by De Matos Ryan Architects and the interior was designed by Carden Cunietti. The clients are North American; Carden Cunietti were asked to help design their large family house using elements of mid-century furniture and modern elements. Take a look at the lower ground floor which best typifies this by the concrete floors and selection of pieces using designs by Charlotte Perriand. In terms of the architecture, De Matos Ryan added a double height void which links the upper and lower ground living spaces. The house opens up to the garden, where a cast concrete counter blurs the boundary between the indoor and outdoor spaces. I love the funky vibe of this home – very cool furnishings and I am always a fan of lots of graphic artwork and piles of books.
