Stalking brick in Brisbane

Posted on Sat, 2 Feb 2013 by midcenturyjo

Stepping down a steep slope in inner city Brisbane is a brick house of interconnected boxes. Walls slide wide open and privacy is assured with high brick walls. Private courtyards extend out from living areas but the secret jewel of this house is the view from the bedroom. Slide back the doors and your can almost pick the flowers from mature jacaranda and pointsiana trees. Brick walls meet a wall of green. Of course it helps to live in the subtropics. I’d love to be woken from my sleep by the drumming of rain from an early morning storm. The architect is the award winning James Russell. Real estate stalking in my part of the world. Stalking new old apartments

The Baxter, an iconic 1950’s apartment building in Bellevue Hill, Sydney has been given a new lease on life. With interiors by SJB Interiors there are a number of renovated 2 bedroom apartments for sale. I, of course, am drawn to the one with the harbour views and the amazing curved windows. The simpler apartments just don’t seem to cut it after that. Lucky I’m not in the market for a 60 year old apartment for just under $1 million AUD. Still I love the kitchens and bathrooms… and the retro furniture. Real estate stalking display units on a Saturday. Links here and here while they last.

Stalking an inner city apartment

Stalking a beautifully renovated art deco era apartment in Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay. Open flow living and dining with clever wrap around kitchen. Sunny, bright and all white the space is warmed by the use of timber benchtops with a dash of red in the backsplash as focus. Everything is sleek and clean lined with minimal furniture and art. Something annoys me though. The large piece of leather carelessly wrapped around the couch. Deliberate wabi sabi? Haven’t sent the couch out to be upholstered yet? Forgot to straighten it before the photo shoot? It’s driving me crazy in the otherwise zen like apartment. Link here while it lasts.

Stalking retro

I must admit before I go on that I did not find this fantasy time capsule of a home. Oh no there are other hard core real estate stalkers out there in the internets who email, tempt me, show me things I shouldn’t see. (Thanks Alison!) Welcome to a retrolicious dream home. Oh my! How OTT! How bad taste! How perfect! Like stepping back into an uppers/downers and martini fuelled technocolour, freak show trip. Lattice patterned mirror walls, wall to wall synthetic carpet, a sunken conversation pit that would be right at home in Palm Springs, a stone bathroom and a kitchen that just leaves me gasping. There is even an electric organ! This place is so hot thank goodness there is a pool to jump into to cool down. Even better it’s not for sale. It’s for rent… furnished… move right in… just bring the booze and the Pucci bell bottom pantsuit. I feel an uncontrollable urge to back tease my hair, slather on the eyeliner and slide into my marabou slippers. Perhaps Elvis will drop round when he is finished his shift at the 7-Eleven. See I’m rambling! This lovingly refurshibed 70’s home in Caulfield North, Melbourne is obvious the lair of a retro collector and it could be yours, if just for a little while. Stalking on a Saturday

It is sooooooo hot in my part of the world at the moment. Most of the country is experiencing a heatwave. Day after day of unrelenting high temperatures, the threat of bushfires and smoke curling into everything. Oh to be sitting at the table in this house, a large pitcher of iced tea making rings on the wood, waiting for the sea breeze to roll in and annoy the pages of the Saturday papers spread in disarray before me. In my fantasy the fire of course is not lit! What a lovely beachy home perched above the trees. Books, vintage furniture and tapa cloth. Perfect. What a great way to start the real estate stalking year. Link here while it lasts.
